Fan vs. no fan

Moving ahead on my greenhouse. About 12 by 9 feet and 7 1/2 high. I have the glass, double pain. Looking at ventilation options. Do I need a fan? If no fan, is there some ratio of area to vent size that will allow convection to do the job? Anybody got a gut feel of what works? What works for you, both using just convection, and also those that ended up putting in a fan? Thanks for past help, and any comments here.

Most any greenhouse can benefit from a fan. It not only helps to control temperatures, but it also contributes to stronger stems on plants, particularly seedlings. My setup is nothing more complicated than a $30 oscillating fan attached to a shelf, and plugged in to a $50 thermostatic control that I have set to kick in above 85F.

You need to have a means of releasing excess heat that builds up quickly once sun is shining brightly. I'm not sure that you need a large exhaust fan for a smaller structure and in fact if you install too large of an exhaust fan it will be repeatedly turning on and off to keep inside temperature normal when sun is bright, yet outside air is cooler.

In many high tunnels the ventilation is accomplished by rolling up the sides of a structure. Others install solar powered ridge vents or other passive controls to release the heat. Fans have some advantages but the advantage that Kudzu mentioned is better accomplished by an internal circulation fan as opposed to a wall mounted exhaust fan. I use both fan types and still roll up sides during summer months.

If you install an exhaust fan you must allow for makeup air by either physically opening an opposing door, window or have an intake louver that is open when you either manually or thermostatically run the exhaust fan.

A simple internal circulation fan is not enough unless you otherwise open the structure. If you just circulate 120*F air inside your plants will still suffer severely.

We have a Matthews Fan Company Vent-Bettina in our kitchen (mounted between the kitchen and LR--formerly our DR). Ours is the teak blade option, rather than the metal blades with "cage" version (available both ways), but I would imagine they function the same way. One big difference, obviously, is how it looks. We liked it's "funky" and slightly different look--the perfect bit of "bling" for our kitchen reno! Other difference, is how it moves the air. Typical ceiling fan moves in one plane, so the air is circulated either upward or downward in a horizantal, circular motion. With the gyroscopic fans, the fan blades are moving in a vertical plane. while the fan's "body" is rotating horizontally (clockwise), *Note, the fan blades/heads are motorized, while the body is not. The motion of the blades, head position/angle drive the fan's "body" rotation. The air is being moved by the spinning fan blades, and is circulated throughout the space by the rotation of the entire unit. The end result is pretty much the same with both types of fans (air is being moved!), though in our application, this type of fan has the added benefit of visually "serving" both rooms. I would say it might have a bit of an edge (over a conventional fan) cooling our two adjacent spaces because of its design. We did not set up our old fan in the kitchen post-reno (after opening up the wall between the two rooms), so I don't have a true comparison. Here is a link that might be useful: Matthews Fan Co. With reasonable electric rates (which I assume would be cheaper to operate a heat pump with than an 80% gas furnace with your gas rates), and a mild winter climate, a heat pump would be a good option in my opinion. You can keep the gas furnace for backup, though it may not see much use, and doing so would not allow you to leverage the tax credit since you'd need a variable-speed fan which boosts the efficiency for higher SEER equipment. What you would potentially install is a heat pump and a fan coil inside, and that would take care of the heating and cooling and could keep you the tax credit if you choose the correct components. A contractor should come to your home and discuss all this with you and hopefully do a heat loss/heat gain calculation to determine the correct size equipment. I'll attach the link below where you can see what is a rated match (just a tip: keep the model numbers as simple as possible; for example, a Trane may be proposed as 4TWX5036A1000A, but in the database it only reads 4TWX5036A1 -- if you are having trouble finding results). The first link is for air conditioners, and the second for heat pumps. Your 58STA is probably not in the database because it isn't variable speed. Just so you see how it works, look at heat pumps and type in 4TWX5036 for outside and 4TEE3F for inside, and you'll see possible indoor fan coil matchups and their ratings. "We have no vents in place leading from the attic to the second floor" The whole house fan would go in the attic and draw air from the second floor. Our fan draws air from the hallway centrally located on the second floor but there are options for fans in each room. The installer would determine whether you need more attic venting to the outside of the house. We have a 2700 cfm whole house fan and LOVE it. When it cools down in the evening we open the windows on our 2nd floor and turn the fan on. It's amazing how fast is cools the home. Since the whole house fan vents to the attic it also turns the air over in the attic helping to cool the attic. We have been very happy with our whole house fan. There are some things to consider though. I've read comments from experts on here about fire hazards due to the suction from the fan. I believe this is primarily a concern for those with water heaters in the home. Our water heater is in our garage and so the flame is not subject to the pressure variation caused by the fan. Hopefully some experts will chime in on the things to look out for.

To avoid this, I chose 36” Thermador all gas. We love the oven for its fast heating and the fan that runs is very quiet relative to my previous KitchenAid electric ovens. The cool down cycle is much, much shorter than the electric I had. I don’t have the clock/timer or self clean, just bake, broil, extended bake, and convection. The very low simmer on two burners is wonderful since my other half loves to make soups. We’ve never tried the chocolate chips on a paper plate trick, but he just finished cooking his oatmeal.

For passive greenhouse ventilation, the top vents should be at least 20% of the floor area, and the bottom side vents at 10%. For your structure, that would be 22 sq. ft top and 11 sq. ft bottom vents.

You also have to take account of the height difference between the top and bottom vents and the temperature difference.

If you are going to use the greenhouse year round and you are in even a moderate climate you will need aventilation system. For this size I would recommend a 12" exhaust fan up high in one end, a 12" motorized intake shutter down low in the opposite end. I would wire them both to a thermostat so they come on at the same time.
