J&P Own Root Roses
Comments (9)miriam, I got Pope John Paul II and Sweetness own root from J&P this winter, because I wanted both roses to grow on their own roots and couldn't find them anywhere else. I believe Sweetness is carried by J&P exclusive anyway and since I am such a sucker of lavender colored roses, so I had to try it! The roses arrived in a decent size, but some of the canes where damaged and also some of the roots where broken and even split, I guess because of poor handling. I cut the roots back to a healthy part and also the canes, that were damaged. Then I potted both roses up in containers. The roses were having some cane die back, but it stopped after I had cut the canes back to a healthy part, again. I have to say they by now they do reasonably well. Still I would not order from J&P again, if I have a chance to get the same rose from another vendor own root, because I felt they didn't treat their roses very well and I don't want to support that. It's quite a pitty, because J&P were carrying really nice roses in the past and some of them exclusively. Their quality standards seemed to have come down after the company was sold. Their was also a long thread about that issue here on GW. I have heard, that they will deliver own root roses to the nurseries from next year one. I may consider to buy their own root roses directly from a local nursery, though. This way you can at least check out the canes, the strength of the plant and if the roots are badly damaged you can return it easily to the nursery and get a substitute....See MoreBought $383 worth of roses on J&P last night
Comments (23)Last week I received 2 roses (DAs "Crocus Rose" and "White Pearl in a Red Dragon's Mouth") from Ashdown Roses. I got an email that they were on sale. They were in excellent shape, and the Dragon's mouth rose has 3 new buds on it. I also received (DAs "Christopher Marlowe") from Jung Seeds a week or so ago, also. It, too was in excellent condition. I would definitely order from either place again. Ashdown's sent me an email that they were delaying shipment until the weather cooled a little....and then the rose arrived as was promised. I am sorry you had a bad experience with J&P....however, you are not the first person I've heard that's unhappy with them. Hope you can get a response from them, or either your money back. Comments (6)Quote: "Furthermore it is illegal to charge your credit card for an item until it has shipped. Period. Does not matter what state you are in." I'm sorry, that's not quite true. Here is the FTC's ruling on this, and you'll see that if you're "reserving" a product, there is a 30 day window, and "reserving" is exactly what you're doing when you're dealing with a plant/flower supplier. What is the Mail or Telephone Order Rule? The Rule requires that when you advertise merchandise, you must have a reasonable basis for stating or implying that you can ship within a certain time. If you make no shipment statement, you must have a reasonable basis for believing that you can ship within 30 days. That is why direct marketers sometimes call this the "30-day Rule." If, after taking the customerÂs order, you learn that you cannot ship within the time you stated or within 30 days, you must seek the customerÂs consent to the delayed shipment. If you cannot obtain the customerÂs consent to the delay -- either because it is not a situation in which you are permitted to treat the customerÂs silence as consent and the customer has not expressly consented to the delay, or because the customer has expressly refused to consent -- you must, without being asked, promptly refund all the money the customer paid you for the unshipped merchandise. Comments (23)I had to call J&P and get them to credit me for the five I ordered that never broke dormancy. The plants looked really good, thick green canes and good roots, but none took. I, like you, planted them right next to my Breck's roses and I had the same situation. I did have a three Breck's roses die, but these were smallish to begin with. I don't think it has to do with the crop so much as Park Seed's (the owners of J&P) sales policy. There's a reason why they put these roses on sale. Irony: Based on the credit that they gave me I can only afford two roses (of course I'm waiting for better growing times) when I originally bought 5 during their sale. I'm going to try their small potted roses when I do order. Pity since I really was excited for the varieties that I ordered....See Moreseil zone 6b MI
