If they haven't broken dormancy by now they were duds to begin with. Contact J&P right away and see what they'll do. DO NOT let them send you replacements NOW! It's far too late in the season for you to plant anything and hope it will live through the winter. Either get your money back or something to be sent NEXT spring.

As Michael explained, the later you get bare roots the longer they have been kept in storage and the less likely they are to be healthy. That's not to say I haven't done so but you really have to be careful and pamper/baby them a lot. And that's hoping they aren't already dead to begin with. By May you really need to be buying potted roses to know they're alive and healthy.

I ordered from that sale too. I usually don't order from those, but thought I would try.. Mine were dead when they arrived, I learned my lesson, better to pay the full price and get them at the right time!

Karen, You too?! I am so sorry to hear that. I have 2 Polar Joy rose trees, one is 100% dead, one is 75% dead, trying to contact Bailey Nursery for replacement right now. And one of the bargain DA roses from Wayside Gardens gone with the wind too, I called their customer service, they were nice and gave me a in store credit for it. Another DA from them-Pricess Anne is just sitting there with some leaves but without new growth, it's still alive, but not doing too good. I'd have to wait and see, hope for the best. JP's customer service is pretty good, they'll give you money back for sure. I hope they didn't cost you a lot. The 2 trees cost me 2 scooter tires, not cheap.

Well, I was having such good luck with the Brecks roses that I thought J&P roses shouldn't be any different. I got two collections from Brecks around the same time I got these roses. All of the 10 roses are doing great. Even the roses from Wayside that I bought later in the season all made it. So I think they might have sent me duds. They did not look as fresh as other vendors' roses.

Summersrhythm, I am sorry to hear that you too have some losses. I hope that you get refunds for them, esp. the expensive ones.

I think you may have received duds if your experience was similar to mine. I bought from the J&P sale too and I just called them yesterday about 5 roses that didn't break dormancy and have turned completely brown and 2 roses that were mislabeled (both were completely white when they should have been orange and a dark pink). Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a refund on one of them since it was stated for zones 5-8 and I' in 9. They were also unable to refund shipping as they said that was handled with a different company and non-refundable.

Another rose has turned brown so I may have to make another call soon...

Thanks Karen, I am trying. :-) It could be worse, it could be more duds in my rose piles......we all bought piles and piles roses this spring. :-) Just try to think about the bright side.

Charlene, Sorry to hear yours too. I am glad you got some money back. I hope the shipping wasn't a lot.

Since when are roses not suited for Zone 9? That's just a BS excuse not to refund. And the shipping was handled with a different company? WTH? Something sounds fishy to me.

I did have trouble with their roses tho this spring. I had to call and get replacements for DARING SPIRIT and SIGNATURE. They were the only roses I ordered from them, and the first batch never broke dormancy. They replaced them for me right away tho, including shipping. Both replacement plants have done just fine.

J&P just isn't the company anymore that my Mom loved and bought many of her roses from. I always look but I'm very hesitant to actually purchase from them now. I did buy a couple of their boxed bare roots this spring from a local nursery but even those struggled to get started. The quality just isn't there anymore.

Thanks, Seil. I just did not realize there are different qualities from different vendors regarding bareroots, as they are graded. I misunderstood the grading system. The grading is just based only on the size of the bareroots not the overall quality of the plant.

I think Jackson Perkins and Wayside Gardens are the same company now.

Something is up with J&P bareroots. Ask Kulbakhan! He mentioned earlier this year that ordered tons of bare roots this year from all sorts of vendors and the only ones he had trouble with were the J&P ones. (He posted a photo somewhere on here where all his potted roses are leafed out and there's like 3-4 bare ones he mentions are from J&P).

I ordered 3 from Wayside Gardens (same company as J&P) and one of the three didn't leaf out. I started bare root roses from Aldi, Brecks, Costco, David Austin and Regan's this year and the only one that didn't leaf out was one that I got from Wayside. I've heard from others here too saying their J&P roses never broke dormancy.

I've started bare root roses from many vendors over the years and I've never had a rose not break dormancy, until now. I even started some really bad quality ones from Big Lots. They didn't survive, but they broke dormancy. I definitely think they either had the roses in storage too long, or had them at the wrong temperatures. Something must have gone wrong. Like Seil says, they are not the company they used to be. :(

I got a few from them later in the season and they are doing okay. I must have gotten lucky :). Sorry that hasn't been the case for everyone!

I've had troubles with them this year too, with all 8 of them TERRIBLY slow to break dormancy, then one dying outright, and two never breaking dormancy. I've also had no response to email showing photos of the problems so I'll hope to get through to a human calling. I agree this is not the J&P we used to know, and the product is decidedly less than stellar even when bought at the normal sales times. Ironic that they keep sending me emails every day or two trying to tempt me to buy more roses this season, when the only reason I trusted any money at all to the much declined J&P company was because it wasn't much money to risk.

Cynthia, did you buy them during the sale they had in May? I sent them an email after I posted this. I guess I have to call them because I have yet to get a response from them. I am glad that I did not get more than 2 roses.

Summersrhythm, I also bought 6 roses from Wayside about the same time that J&P had this sale. These Austin roses actually are doing very well. They broke dormancy without any problems, grew, and bloomed a few roses since planted.

Karen, I ordered 21 DAs from Wayside Gardens, only 1 is bad, 1 grows slow, others are doing good. Some of them got midge damage, I treated them a few days ago, hope to see some blooms. I can't wait to see Claire Austin's blooms, some people got wrong roses but it was tagged as CA.

Summer, I'm with you. I have a store credit as well and when I tried to use it, it didn't work. Now I have to call to place the order. Also my Claire Austin was questionable having very YELLOW blooms on it. I think it may just be my heat and humidity, but I was disappointed. Yellow and with very few petals. Its funny because I usually like yellow roses, but since I was expecting white, they just look dirty to me. LOL

I had to call J&P and get them to credit me for the five I ordered that never broke dormancy. The plants looked really good, thick green canes and good roots, but none took. I, like you, planted them right next to my Breck's roses and I had the same situation. I did have a three Breck's roses die, but these were smallish to begin with. I don't think it has to do with the crop so much as Park Seed's (the owners of J&P) sales policy. There's a reason why they put these roses on sale.

Irony: Based on the credit that they gave me I can only afford two roses (of course I'm waiting for better growing times) when I originally bought 5 during their sale. I'm going to try their small potted roses when I do order. Pity since I really was excited for the varieties that I ordered.

I agree with you kublakan that there's definitely a reason these roses were put on sale at such reduced prices. From this negative experience, I don't think that I will order bareroots from them again.

Yet Breck's had them even cheaper and we all had fairly good results with those. I only lost 2 out of the 15 they sent me. Not bad for the $10 for 5 roses sale so many of us took advantage of. :)
