Anyone else have a hard time getting rid of unwanted roses?
Comments (23)There were roses everywhere when we bought this house, and we have been removing them one by one and giving them to friends. One friend lives on a street called Rose Circle, or something like that, and she has been good about taking the unwanted roses off our hands. I have been replacing the roses with drought tolerant plants, such as succulents and cacti, which I much prefer. Still, some roses still come back from roots that we were unable to remove, and so it is an ongoing process to get rid of them. We have kept one rose bush in the front yard that makes white flowers, and it seems to bloom all year, which is why we kept it. Also, the white flowers go better with our color schemes than the pink ones. We are trying to get rid of the pink that we inherited with the house. The first thing to go was an ornamental peach tree that attracted possums. We have replaced that with banana and heliconia - not drought tolerant plants, but they work with our existing watering system. I have a hard time throwing out orchid cuttings, but we have too many epidendrum in the back yard and no place to put all of them. I also have a bit of a hard time throwing out bromeliad cuttings, but I have no trouble at all throwing out roses, as the thorns are quite nasty. Some of the bromeliads are nasty also, and so I do not feel bad about throwing those out. If it pricks you, do not feel bad about throwing it out is my philosophy. It's nice when you can find homes for unwanted plants, but it is not nice to keep something that is getting in your way....See MoreI need a pep talk.
Comments (19)Well I guess by now you can see that you are not alone in thinking on giving it up. I too have the same problems, stink bugs, squash vine borers, whiteflies, squirrels, hot dry or hot humid stinkin weather. At times I can't bring myself to go outside in this stuff and do the gardening chores that are required. Every year I say I'm giving it up and buying from the farmer's market. But every year come February I start seeding. Why? It's not so much as the reaping as the love of gardening and the challenges that come with it. Every year it's a new challenge but every year there are a few successes. I keep asking myself what did I do right on the few successes that I didn't on the failures. After thinking about this in detail I came up with this answer....NOTHING! In our climate we are at the mercy of nature. Like the weather nothing is predictable in the garden...except one thing....I will do it again next year because it's the love of gardening and the hope that this will be the year that it will be a success. If you garden for any other reason (production, making money, bragging rights, etc.) you may want to consider giving it up. Look around Atlanta area, do you see any tomato, pepper, or any other major commercial vegetable farms? Most of the major production is done further south where they start earlier before the bugs begin and also plant later after the bugs are gone not to mention the use of agricultural pesticides and irrigation. Don't be discourage...just keep in mind that nothing is perfect when it comes to gardening and there is no secret, just the right conditions coming together at the right time...Good luck... gardening is as much for the soul as it is for taste!...See MoreI need a pep talk (or a lecture) re CLOTHES!
Comments (12)My DIL actually taught me to have a little goodbye ritual if I find I'm dithering about parting with something that I never wear. She is my de-cluttering buddy, and I actually look forward to all the fun we have going through my closet. We give little speeches to clothes, telling them "goodbye" and either thanking them for a wonderful relationship, or that we were never compatible, and it's time to move on. Sometimes I find that all that's holding me back is simple old guilt...guilt about cost, mistakes, waste, impulse buys etc, rather than that I don't want to part with the clothes. Sometimes too, it's having to face up to the fact that life is moving on, .... letting go the leggings, the bikini, the pencil skirt, the halter top, the wet-suit, is having to admit that I'm older, I'm a different shape, my ski-ing days are over, time is moving along. I find that what really helps me too, is to just see the clothing as what it really is... simply fabric, sewn together, with a bit of hardware added on. It's not my memories, it's not my life, it's not *me*. I had a real eye opener one time. I'd hung onto an outfit that I bought for my son's wedding, and that I wore quite a bit afterwards. I found it hart to part with, even though I knew it had "had it's day". A few weeks after I had put it in the give-away bag, I saw the same suit in a shop on the "bargain" rack, and realised that if I was shopping for clothes, I wouldn't have given it a second glance. Now I use that as my standard, if I'm in doubt about purging an item from my closet. "Would I buy you today if I saw you in a shop?"...See MoreI need a pep talk!
Comments (19)i have often peeked over to this forum, but really feel the need to get some organization into my life... and clothes are really hard for me to purge too... right now i have a 1/4 filled large bag that easily could be filled in no time except for the fact that i find it sooo hard. the other day i tried on all the many shorts i have. i tried on one pair and they were way too tight. i know i have gained a couple of pounds in the last year or so, but didn't think i had gained that much... as i was folding them up to go in the donate bag i noticed there was a folded grocery list and a couple of coupons in the pocket that had clearly gone through the wash when they were last washed-- i took it out and unfolded them carefully to see when i had last worn them and the coupon expiration dates were 2008! ugh! i couldn't believe it! knowing i hadn't worn them since 2008 made it easy for me to put in the bag! it would be easier for me to get rid of stuff if more was really tight... even though i may lose 5 lbs or so, my body has changed and probably won't ever look like it once did... i like the idea of going thru stuff asking would i buy it in a thrift store... for me, i have to go thru things multiple times if they fit before i can toss into the bag- so time consuming--- it really is sort of crazy....See More- 7 years ago
