amsonia hubrichtii planting depth

I'm wondering if my amsonia hubrichtii is planted correctly. As you can see in the photo below, there is a protruding, fleshy lump from which many of the stalks appear. This has seemed normal in the past, but this year many stalks have sprouted from underneath the soil around the lump, and it makes we wonder if perhaps the lump should be below the soil line as well.

I'm sure I planted at the natural soil line when I purchased the plant a couple years ago, but it's certainly possible that I could have planted it too shallow.
