I used an axe to divide. All divisions thrived with no interruption in flowering cycle.

OOOOH, I am jealous. That is one of those natives that i lust over but I do not know if if will take the dry alkalinity of Central Texas. We have a small amsonia native to Texas but I think they like it around streams and in the low lands. Are you in a dry place. Tell me about your gardens conditions that make this baby so Happy. This is one of those plants that I see in mailorder catalogues and my had twitches. I can't water too much and I am not into undo plant protection. That is why I plant natives.

I too have taken an axe to mine but it was to remove it from the garden. I personally didn't think much of the plant or the flowers. I just don't get what is so special about this plant. I guess it is one you either love or hate.

I got my tabernaemontana from a deserted neglected planting whose owner had planted them out by the road on an easement and when she died no one but me knew they belonged with the "back house". After identifying and watching them for about 3 years I asked permission and came digging. The roots were very huge, warty and tuberous. I nearly destroyed them and myself digging them out! However they survived and when they came up the second year I divided the clump but I haven't looked underground since. If I do, I'll send you an e-mail. I love the texture and the blue flowers. It stays upright and looks neat all summer. I don't get a lot of fall color since there is often a hard freeze before it fully develops that lovely gold. However, I don't regret my plants - they are quite lovely even without the fall color.

Hi Bev I have Amsonia hubrichtii plants if you are interested. These are 2-year old perennials. I also have freshly harvested Clematis heracleifolia seed. Your list included shrub clematis. I also have two varieties of named Clematis heracleifolia - 'china Purple' and the (temporarily forgotten) other kind. These should be harvested immediately. Personally, I prefer the species. I am interested in PawPaw seed. Would you like to trade.

In Wildflowers of the US & Canada, NEWF's William Cullina recommends that "anyone who suggests division of these must be comfortable with a chainsaw." He goes on to mention that the older woody crowns will break up over time and that you can break divisions off those.
