PPA Plant of the Year 2010: Amsonia hubrichtii

This from the Plants Delights enewsletter 1/11:

"The Perennial Plant Association has just announced that (Arkansas Blue Star) has been selected as the 2011 PPA Plant of the Year. I cant imagine anyone with a sun garden who isnt already growing this wonderful spring-flowering native perennial, but if so, dont wait any longer. One of my favorite stories from the late JC Raulston was when he was attending a dinner of the Horticultural Cabbages and Kings in the early 1990s. Each speaker was asked to extol the virtues of one favorite woody plant and one perennial. JC was not a perennial person, but he later remarked that his obvious choice was Amsonia hubrichtii. This year, we are very excited to offer a new selection of blue star, Amsonia ciliata Spring Sky from Pennsylvanias Henry Foundation. Amsonia Spring Sky is about half the size of Amsonia hubrichtii with an otherwise very similar appearance."

Warren Leach at Tranquil Lake Nursery in MA-loves it as a tough tough plant, drought and junk soil tolerant.
