Can I plant new lawn on top of an exisitng lawn?
Comments (2)A lot of people like clover. I believe they ignore the bees. My favorite buzzy insect is the paper wasp. I am nurturing a nest of them outside my back door. I like them because they clean up the caterpillars from the yard and, if I don't bother them, they don't bother me. Would you be willing to spray vinegar on the clover? You could try that on a hot, sunny day (hah, hah, Portland!). Maybe just a sunny day. You only spray the leaves, not the soil. Vinegar should kill the tops. Spray again if/when it comes back. It will come back from seed until the seed is all gone. Seeding over existing grass is done all the time, but usually in the fall when the underlying lawn has settled into a routine. In the spring you will be fighting against the clover trying to grow fast on the nutrients stored over the winter. If you try it, scalp the grass/weeds as low as you can before you start. You want to get the seed in contact with the underlying soil so the roots will grow into soil. Roots will not grow into air if the soil they sprout into is being held above the soil by other plants. What kind of grass were you thinking? I think rye is very common in the PNW. You might be able to keep the weeds out by mowing your grass at the highest setting on your mower. Tall grass shades out the weed seedlings underneath and stops them from photosynthesizing....See Morecare for my new lawn(s)
Comments (0)As a 1st time homeowner, I am completely ignorant of how to deal with my lawn(s) and have a few issues... I put new hardscape in the front yard, re-did the sprinklers, and laid sod - Dwarf Tall Fescue (Festuca Arundinacea). On the areas that are shaded by a large tree, the grass is growing well (and I'm getting used to my lawnmower). On the part that gets full sun for most of the day, the growth is VERY slow and some parts are thinning. Watering is done every other day for 8 minutes on the shady side and 15 minutes in the sunny area. Another issue is in the backyard where I pulled out some old hardscape, placed sprinklers, and spread seed (same grass as in front). It has been a few months and the grass is coming up acceptably with (as expected) a number of weeds. I've spot treated the weeds to kill them (& gotten a bit of overspray on the surrounding grass). I was intending to get some more seed into these areas but would like to incorporate this with the solution to another problem. I'm not happy with the grading that was done before the seed was spread - there are places that it's easy to trip in! I was wondering if it might be work to go over the lawn with some sort of enriched soil to fill in low spots. It might be ugly for a while but wouldn't my existing grass come up through this thin topping/levelling layer? I could even add more seed at this point to help with the issue of the dead grass from the aforementioned weed treatment. Comments or recommendations?...See MoreLawn weeds and new lawn
Comments (2)Any chance of deciding that the clover is something desirable? I bought some clover for my lawn (in my case, it was strawberry clover, which looks a lot like white clover but does better in my alkaline soil). Clover adds nitrogen from the atmosphere and is drought tolerant. If you really want to kill it, something that will kill all the plants will probably work, but there are probably seeds already, so you may want to kill it, then water daily for a week or so to get the existing seeds to sprout, then kill again. I would not turn the soil over or bring in new soil. There's no way to know what weeds are under the surface or in the soli you might buy....See Moredead lawn to new lawn
Comments (4)That is definitely step 1 - figure out why the old grass died. It doesn't make any sense to plug ahead if you have a problem that is going to kill the new grass too. Also, what do you mean by "large" area. ie in square ft or acres. CA people tend to have a drastically different idea of a large lawn than midwesterners. If it is a couple hundred sq ft, the easiest fix is usually skimming the dead grass off with a shovel, leveling and laying sod. If the area is larger than that, you are usually better off killing the existing grass with herbicide, cutting it very short, raking up the debris, and then seeding and fertilizing....See Moredtcliffo65
