Cake panic!

.... is what I would be having right now if I didn't know exactly where to come for the very best advice and help. You all will know what to do!

Okay so I am tasked with making the dessert for a baby shower for a young woman who is like a niece to me. I am a good cook and can make things taste great, but I am no dessert baker and definitely NOT good at making things look pretty (that's why I stick to pie and let others make frosted cakes and cupcakes).

And yet ... I searched for easy cute cakes for baby showers, and found this one that I think I might be able to pull off: Onesie cake

So I decided to do a practice cake tonight, just using a cake mix and canned frosting, to see if I could pull it off. I used a 9x13" Pyrex pan. It's cooling now, in the refrigerator to get good and cold, so I don't yet have the many, many decorating questions I will surely have.

What I need to know now is how to make a bigger cake: this one came out really thin and obviously won't be enough. There are 16 people confirmed attending so far and possibly up to 20.

I think that when I was trying to do some research I saw people using 10'x15" cakes. I hate to go to a restaurant supply place or someplace to get a new pan I will probably never use again. I measured a roasting pan I can use, and behold! It's 10'x15". Will that work? It's dark metal, if that matters.

Does anyone have a cake recipe that will make the right amount of batter? How long do I bake it?

And of course ... I definitely want all your tips and tricks for assembling, frosting, and decorating this thing.

Thank you in advance for your expertise and cleverness!
