what kind of kitchen sink? Would Granite be practical?
Comments (3)We put in a black granite composite top-mount sink with Formica countertops about two years ago, and I love it. I didn't think it was any heavier than the double cast iron sink I took out of my old house. It is easy to clean, and very sturdy. I did damage it a little bit with a scorched pot, so they are not 100% heat proof, but you can easily set a pot of boiling water in/on it with no problems. The scorch mark is pretty minimal, and I only notice it because I know it's there. Overall, I'd definitely consider a granite sink on our next, not-too-distant kitchen reno....See MoreWhat kind of spider is this? Was in my kitchen sink
Comments (12)It's one of the "false Widow" spiders, Steatoda grossa. These are, as Jean001a pointed out, in the Theridiidae family, which includes true Widows( genus Latrodactus) and the American House Spiders. These, however, are not considered "medically significant" in terms of venom....See MoreAdvice on sink?
Comments (9)Single bowl is definitely the way to go. Double bowl sinks were designed prior to the invention of the dishwasher. We washed in one side and rinsed in the other. Let me outline the most popular concern I have heard about making the change from a double bowl sink to a single bowl sink. Most Americans use their dishwashers for dishes, cutlery and glasses. Some, like myself, like to wash a few dishes here and there without running the dishwasher. The old fashioned way was to place a grid drain in the left bowl so that dishes could be washed in the right bowl and set to dry in the left bowl. That divider kept dirty water from getting on the cleaned items. If you have a double bowl sink I guarantee that you have to take your large pans, platters, cookie sheets, etc. and place them vertically inside the right bowl. You have to spin them around to wash them and you have to spin them around again to rinse them. It is impossible to lay them down inside the sink. The new way, using a single bowl sink with a rear corner drain, is similar. Merely place a drying rack in the left side of the sink and wash on the right. The sink should be sloped to the right rear so the dirty water never touches the clean dishes. Since the drain is in the right rear, there is little chance for a misplaced dish to cover the drain and begin the maddening unintentional filling of the sink with dirty water....See MoreWhat kind of lighting over sink with a window?
Comments (21)I agree that they're not the best combination, but it's still in flux. I've got almost two months before I need to lock anything in. I'll be on the look out for lighting that compliments the island pendants without going for a matching look. I like your feedback on the two smaller recessed lights, I'm going to check if that's possible during my next planning meeting with the builder. I don't think I feel as strongly about going no pendant over the sink, but I do agree that there may be better options. As for the island; It's 34" wide and 66" long. The pendants I have chosen for it are 16" wide and 16" tall. That means there should be 9" of clearance on either side of the island. I'm not sure on how high exactly to hang them but 72-78" from the floor seems like it would make sense. Thanks for all the feedback, I'm definitely no pro when it comes to home design and I really like hearing other opinions. I'm good at picking out what I like, but applying it to an entire room is difficult....See MoreAnne McGinnis
