Homeowners’ request: This was an idea house designed for Cottage Living magazine. The house replaced an eyesore and needed to reflect a fresh aesthetic couched in a historic Mission Revival setting. The kitchen reads old but serves a current lifestyle.
Style points: Dark olive green cabinets. Black-and-white Moorish-inspired tile backsplash. Green shelves in doorless pantry. Multiple light fixtures at varying heights. Coffered ceiling.
Other special features: Furniture-style island with zinc countertop. Acid-washed marble countertops on the perimeter. Magnetized primer for displaying children’s artwork. French doors to courtyard.

Style points: Custom island designed to look like an antique Asian buffet piece. Grasscloth wallpaper backsplash in a flame stitch pattern, sandwiched between glass — it can be slid open to reveal storage behind it. Lanterns hang from an antique Chinese lattice over the sink.
Designer secret: “Sandwiching the backsplash wallpaper in glass gives you the ability to transform any wallcovering into a backsplash that can resist spills and stains,” designer Andrea Monath Schumacher says.

Homeowners’ request: Add something original to a pocket door that separates the kitchen from an in-law suite in a remodeled and expanded 1960s house.
Style points: Reclaimed-wood artist Blake Sloane of Forty Third Place created the installation using 50-year-old cedar that was deconstructed from another part of the house and arranged in geometrical stripes and shapes.
Other special features: Walnut cabinet drawer and door fronts on Ikea cabinet boxes. Ten-foot ceiling. Skylights. Walk-in pantry in lieu of upper cabinets. Built-in computer desk (not shown). Matte black pendant lights, drawer pulls, faucet and Schluter Systems trim.
Designer secret: “This kitchen offers a beautiful example of what can be done with bold colors,” designer Nicole Tysvaer says. “No need to stick with the gray-and-white palette.”
