Dawn Redwood Bonsai Pruning Advice- please help / what would you?
Comments (17)This tree LOVES to grow. The gritty mix seems to make my plants very happy. I propagated the cuttings acquired from this tree's pruning in early March, and now have about 20 new Dawn Redwood trees. I have some planted in a forest style, and will probably field grow about half of the rooted cuttings for trunk fattening. They grow so fast. I love this game! I wish I would have discovered my passion for bonsai years ago. Even after dedicating over a year to attentive research, there is not much that can compare to the skills only acquired through experience. I have to learn the hard way sometimes, but if this hobby (obsession) was based on a scholactic scale, I think I've earned myself an even 'B' so far. Anyway, I figured I would keep anyone interested updated......(moochinka). This picture is probably almost 2 weeks old, too, so I'll try to post a more recent one later with a time frame for reference of how much my plants are growing. A big 'shout out' to Al and his enlightening posts that have helped me understand the Plant Kingdom a little better, as I am alone in my interest where I live, and can only learn through you all. Comments (1)Forum is a tad slow through the summer - everyone is hopefully outdoors enjoying their summer! I'm not familiar with the variety of pelargonium you have, but I do grow the more common bedding plant, and a scented one. My experience with their cuttings is that a fresh, quick grown, green cutting roots for me, anything woody does not. You've probably taken your cuttings by now, if you stuck with the 3-4" tips lengths, they are probably nice and green and should root. I've read (and experienced in my indoor rooting projects - I'm up in Canada) that use of rooting hormone produces rot, not roots! But in your area, I'm not sure. If you search this site for rooting tips, you'll find lots to help you along. Best of Growing!...See MoreI made a mistake pruning my espalier apple trees. Advice, please!
Comments (9)three newly-planted ==>>> i would not have pruned a new transplant.. for at least a year.. and maybe two .. so the tree had food making machines .. leaves.. to grow a root mass to support the newly planted tree ... you need to start thinking in tree time.. which is years if not decades ... not out current world of instant gratification ... i am sure orchard peeps do things much differently than i would ... in tree time.. a bad pruning cut means little ... presuming the trees live ... they will outgrow it .... ken...See MoreLoquat advice please
Comments (12)Sadly, our large 20 foot tall loquat here on the property was killed by the yard crew spraying around it with Roundup. I didn't know they were so sensitive, but you can see where they sprayed and it's slowly dying, so can't figure out what else it could be, unless they dumped the leftover roundup there. It was so gorgeous, and I got so much fruit from it every year. That is the only loquat on the property, I think. I have babies growing, but it will be years before they have any fruit at all. I'm brokenhearted....See MoreKatherine 10A
