What antibiotic?

Oh so sorry that you are having such a difficult time.

Is there an option to have the infusion rate slowed during each session? If that's possible, it might help your body accommodate the influx of antibiotic and lessen the side effects.

Is it Cipro? If so, your post title might be a bit more truthful than you'd think.

Cipro isn't good for you

At the very least, call your doctor and let him/her know what's going on. While some people have an allergic reaction to one med., another one might be fine for you.

Anglophilia, I was wondering how you were doing. Not good at all I see. I'm sorry your going thru this. Talk to your doctor about this..for sure you can't go this long without eating. How is your body reacting to liquids? Any fever? And please keep us informed, I care. Your of course in my prayers. Wish I could help.

I agree chloecat cipro nearly killed me. Destroyed my legs. Pretty sure it's what ended my Great Dane, he could no longer walk at all from the damage to his legs. I will never ever take any of that category of drug.

Anglophilia,so sorry you are experiencing this issue-I too,just went to he!! & back from an allergic reaction to eye drops following cataract surgery.

This new doc had been warned about my sensitivity to prednisone,but said that it wouldn't be a problem-well it was,and 11 days of debilitating migraines and he "finally"listened.

I hope that you get this business cleared up-it must be he!! on your whole system....

I'm on IV antibiotics as I have a gram negative bacteria, and I've had adverse reactions to the three oral drugs that work on this: Cipro (affected my kidneys), Levaquin (caused a tear in a tendon), and Avelox (caused drop in oxygen SAT and irregular heart beat). That leaves only IV antibiotics. My reactions are all known side effects of this drug.

I've emailed my doctor - hopefully will hear tomorrow. Can't slow infusion - instructions are it must be given in 30 minutes. I'm hoping perhaps we can try doing it just once daily and see if I tolerate that better.

A few years ago, I was very lucky that my prescription plan was willing to pay for a new inhaled antibiotic, Cayston. It was over $8000 for a 28 day supply - one takes it 28 days on, 28 off. I made it through one round with some trouble; 2nd round just flattened me. We reduced doseage- just couldn't tolerate it - not the only one.

I just have a strange body and this becoming very worrying.

I'm sorry, but I've forgotten...did you say you were allergic to penicillin? If not, could your doctor try using penicillin and an aminoglycoside combined? Perhaps a combination could be better tolerated.

I was given Cipro (by mouth) in January for pneumonia and luckily did not have the serious reactions you are having. A check X-ray a month later showed that it was effective for my case. One problem with antibiotics like Cipro is that once started, it should continue for the full course of medication. It is believed that it contributes to creating "super bugs" when the medication is stopped prematurely. The theory is that initially the weaker and/or more susceptible population of the infection is killed off first. If the medication is stopped at that point, the more resistant bugs yet remain to sub-divide and create a more robust colony of infection.

In your case, you are having a serious reaction. You should be talking to your doctor the moment this occurred. Maybe he could modify the procedure or find a way for you to take nourishment.

Sounds like a nightmare. So sorry.

You make me feel like a weakling, complaining about recurring sinus infections and well controlled asthma. However, I am also too well acquainted with the lay-you-low side effects of antibiotics -- because without them, I'd be dead. I've had Xocin via IV when in hospital for pneumonia two years ago.

When I came out of hospital at the end of October 2016 -- after a (benign) colon resection and a subsequent bleed -- both DH and I got that 'wipe-out' flu in December. I had two rounds of Levofloxacin and one of Prednisone before feeling well enough to leave for Maui January 2.

I was OK here for a while, then drywall dust set off another sinus problem three weeks ago. Now I'm on Day Five of Ten with Amoxicillin 875 2X daily. I am just now beginning to improve. My doctor added Flonase mist to enable me to sleep while breathing through my nose.

One of my Dr. Sue theories is that my poor lung capacity doesn't provide my body enough oxygen. I know that he steroids (Advair) I must take daily for my asthma weaken my immune system.

But...I'm still *here* at 76.

Anglophilia -- You are also still here. In your place, I would go into hospital now, where you'd have drip nourishment and a constant 'flush' in addition to the antibiotic. You'd have oxygen. You'd have REST.

I wouldn't cancel a trip to London NOW for fear of terrorists. It's probably safer than it was last week. This nutcase is dead, and security will be redoubled.

First, though, you have to get better!

I'm so sorry you're going through such a very tough time, Anglo. I hope you're in close touch with your doctors and agree with Chisue that the hospital would be a better place for you, right now. Don't be afraid to be a little pushy!

A side note for Chisue: How do you pronounce "Xocin"? You've sure been through the mill as well!

I'd have gone to the hospital if they could have done anything for me there that I'm not already doing, and they couldn't.

Chisue, supplental oxygen doesn't help my disease - wish it did, even if using it is a pain. I have no trouble getting enough fluids and have been drinking extra water which has helped - this antibiotic is excreted via urine so lots of water means it doesn't build up in my body. I have also figured out which foods trigger my bronchospasm and am now avoiding them. I'm basically eating a very bland, healthy diet (what they feed people in KY hospitals should move them straight to the cardiac ward - it's awful and SO unhealthy!).

I also discovered that using my Nasonex with two sprays per nostril instead of one, has made a huge difference - post nasal drip was contributing to the bronchospasm.

And the Aleve is working its magic, so no steroids! Yeah!!!

I never can sleep when in the hospital - sheets are all wrong, bed is all wrong, they wake one up in the middle of the night to take ones temp when one has not had a fever. It would utterly exhaust me and be very stressful with no benefit. I know this old body very well and what works for it!

I feel much better today, so while all this is working, I'm sticking to it. DS still wants to go to London - I'll just have to play that by ear as I have to feel well enough to GET there, not be there. That's the exhausting part.

sjerin -- OK, I *think* that's the name. Could be Zocin -- sounds like that. The hospitalist and the pulmonary MD were hesitant to prescribe it, but it worked when other things had not. That hospitalization on the wing of patients dying from lung diseases made a big impact on me. People expired or were moved to ICU before they expired every day. I got to walk out and go home.

Anglophilia -- That IS good news! Keep it up. Can you fly in lie-flat seats? Maybe actually sleep a little enroute?

I hesitated to recommend hospitalization, but the flushing is important. I can't swallow the quantity of liquids they could pump into me. Gosh, I would even 'get caught short' due to the drip and having to maneuver the pole into the bathroom. (They did turn down the volume after that.)

Anglophilia, good about the fluids, very good. I'm glad your feeling a tiny bit better. Are you able to drink milk shakes or Ovltine (sp?) Yogurt smoothies?

I'm sure your London trip is giving you something to look forward to. I have never got to travel, but out of the country London would be my dream. My family is all from London I'm the first generation born in the US. My Grandfather was a Queens guard and told many a story. He was born in London on July 4'th. I remember on his 90'th Birthday he received a letter and a dozen roses wishing him a Happy Birthday and how marvolous to be born on the 4'th of July and living in the US...it was signed Sir Robin Renwin (can't remember the correct name spelling) on behalf of The Queen of England. Somewhere I have a copy of that letter, when I run across it I'll share. LOL..LOL

Same type of letter arrived when Grandfather passed away along with a beautiful flower arrangement.

Mama, all my ancestors are English, too! They just arrived in this country a very long time ago! Ha! I've been many times but love London and all of England so much. It feels like "home" to me.

Only dairy I'm eating is yoghurt for breakfast and cheese at lunch. Other than that, it's a trigger food for my cough.

I hear you about hospital sleep. One night, they woke me up to give me a sleeping pill.

You're more than halfway there if you're feeling better. All right! Totally cool.

Summer, I think I reassured HIM! I think he was afraid I was going to die and my children would sue him for not insisting I go to the hospital (which he can't legally do anyway).
