How can I keep raccoons away from my apple tree?
Comments (24)This is a very old post but I would just mention that where the OP lives, killing raccoons is illegal and any trapping must be done only with live or Hav-A-Hart traps. And then you have the issue of what to do with the trapped coon........ Electrified fencing is effective and relatively easily done. Friends who lived almost in downtown Seattle - a highly populated urban area - had a small fish pond in their entry courtyard that was decimated by nightly visits from raccoons until they installed an electrified fence around it. Urban dwelling raccoons are highly adaptable and intelligent animals. And with few natural predators aside from cars and the occasional dog. I live in a much more rural area very close to Seattle and raccoon issue are much less of a concern here as the coyotes keep populations in check (as do cars....too many raccoon bodies along the side of the road). I rarely have any issues with raccoons in my garden but the deer are another problem altogether!! And do far more damage than any raccoon!!...See Morehow to keep fruit flies and ants away from ripening grapes
Comments (8)I have used and seen how coffee grounds under and around all your grape plants should keep them away . Boric acid also works well to rid oneself of ants . Spread across their path and they bring back to the nest . I need to learn how to rid myself of normal sized flies with some gold on them from eating my ripening red seedless grapes...See MoreHow to keep birds out of my yard without scaring away Hummers?

Comments (16)I do both, mixing and the bottom of the hole when planting. I live in a very dry climate, though. That might be why it’s more helpful for me. Overwatering isn’t ever an issue here. So, definitely listen to more local advice. My holes are dug incredibly deep even for a small rose, because my soil is heavy clay. The crystals that I put down at the bottom can’t push anything up from down there, and really only benefit the rose later on, when the roots reach down that far, after many months of deep watering. For the second part, I throw a scant handful into the backfill mix which usually ends up being a minimum of 5 gallons of soil. That’s for planting a band or quart size rose. No wonder it takes me days to plant a single rose on my own! Lol Lisa...See Morealbert_135 39.17°N 119.76°W 4695ft.
