How to keep homeless away?

we had a "green strip park" half a block from my home. Homeless people hung out there, panhandled at the intersections, then ventured into your front yard at night to avail themselves of your water. I could hear my spigot get turned on at night, and would find evidence of them bathing themselves the next morning. It's unnerving to know a stranger is hanging out under your bedroom window. This is why we had full height fences around our back yards, but the front yards were fair game. Even our fruit trees got stripped in the front yards.

We did not try to call the police on the intruders -- they would just come back and turn the water on all day, flooding things. Or they crapped under your windows or on your car. The only way to deter unwanted "visitors" was to plant thorny shrubs under windows and around spigots. If you put a lockbox over your spigots, they would smash them with rocks, destroying the pipes.
