How long can I delay planting my apple and cherry trees?
Comments (1)Potted plants can be transplanted any time. Obviously dormant is better though. It is particularly challenging to transplant things in pots in hot sunny weather - I would wait until there is a cloudy week forecast if it is getting into the hot months by the time you are putting the trees in. Some people elect to keep things in pots the whole summer but I prefer to get them in the ground so they can start adapting and so they don't dry out and die in the pot while I am on vacation or something. I had the exact same problem several years ago except I kept thinking it would be done any day and so did not pot up or heel in things like I should have. I ended up losing several trees. One more thing, it sounds like the delay may be after heeled in plants would be breaking bud. The trees don't realize they are supposed to stay asleep because they are heeled in, they will wake up and then you are stuck with them in their heeled-in spots all summer -- if you try to move a leafing tree you are taking too big huge risk. So, you may want to pot up the bareroots when they show up as well. Scott...See MoreHow can I keep the raccoons away from my apple tree?
Comments (9)I use wire fencing to keep critters away from certain plants. I collect throwaway rolls of wire fencing with a 2 x 4 inch grid. I like it a little rusty, because it's nearly invisible in the garden. I cut pieces, usually about 2 feet high, and encircle the plants to keep out critters like woodchucks. Woodchucks can dig under and climb over a fence that high, except that I cut the fencing so that pokey wire ends stick out of the top and bottom. They are very sharp, so nothing has tried to climb over it. I have to watch out not to skewer myself in the garden, and it's probably not the best method to use if you have little children running around. Maybe something like that would work around your apple tree?...See MoreHow do I keep my danged mulch from blowing away?
Comments (3)Kathi, There's a reason that the most famous song about Oklahoma, from the musical of the same name, has this line: "Oklahoma! Where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain." This is a common question and everyone has their own little tricks to keep the mulch in place. A lot just depends on your particular topography though because you're always going to have trouble if you are in a high, exposed location without any windbreaks around. I've linked a recent, previous discussion for you below. Other people may also throw in their two cents worth here. As for the rubber mulch, I don't really know why it would stay in place any better unless it is really, really significantly heavier. And, I also wonder if it would wash away in a heavy thunderstorm. Maybe someone who has tried it will let you know. Dawn Here is a link that might be useful: Previous Mulch Discussion...See MoreHow to keep opossums and raccoons away from my house.
Comments (11)I disagree that all possums are transient. We have had a family living near us for years. Like raptors and geese most all of these birds fly away when the seasons change, but there are a number of these critters that stick around. Wild animals need a number of things, food, water, shelter and a place to raise their young. Apparently your neighborhood has all of these available. Appaarently you have a bit of a wildlife freeway going on where you live. They are using the same commute route everyday and marking that route. It does not matter how clean your place is at all, it just means you are living between home and dinner and a drink. Im not certain why this is bothersome to you. These animals do their travelling at night (unless they have rabies in which case should you see a critter outside in the late morning or early evening, you should call the humane society to have them trapped and humanely distroyed) Yes they do carry fleas and that can be troublesome if you have animals. Apply frontline or advantage and that should take care of any wayward fleas. You can also have the yard treated if necessary. These wild animals have a very important role in the natural world. They eat a myriade of insects keeping that population down. You can use a set of rubber gloves to use with a paper towel to dispose of the feces and you can hose down the area afterwards if you feel you need to. Have a pest control person come out if you need, just make certain that these critters are not denning up in your home. Raccoons can cause a tremendous amount of damage to a home, pulling out insulation etc. Once you have your house inspected (sometimes done for free) you can rest assured these critters are just walking by on the way to living their lives....See Morerayrose
