Watering While Away
Comments (4)We will be gone for 7 days. I have to keep them outside on the patio--my wife keeps the house really clean and does not want them indoors. I might buy a kid pool, add about an inch of water and place the trays in it. I've also thought about the wicker method, using old cotton socks and a bucket of water. I have 4 trays of different species of tomatoes (~72 plants). I'd like to keep atleast 75% of them. Any adivice on the wicker material or my pool idea will be very appreciated. No way they'll stay alive without water--we are averaging 90 degree temps over the last 4 days....See MoreHow to keep the deer away from new buds !!!
Comments (12)Fencing is always your best bet, and it can take many forms. I had a "deer proof" border (mostly deer resistant plants), that included some delicious roses. To protect the roses, I used a single strand electric fence around the bushes. I baited it with peanut butter smeared on aluminum foil. They never bothered the roses. I put it on a timer so it was off during the day and I wouldn't have to worry about getting shocked myself. I also put up a few isolated electric loops attached to a pole with the same bait (modeled after a similar product on the market). No deer tracks were seen in this border or in my yard. They even left the pansies alone. May not work in an area with heavier deer pressure or if they were starving....See MoreHow to keep roses in growers pots for a while...
Comments (8)Many ares of the New Orleans metro area are reclaimed swamp land- dig two feet and you hit "water", that along with lots of afternoon showers especially in spring seems to cause many plants to grow to mutant sizes. So drainage can be a problem so much water in the saturated ground. I am often surpised to see plants here in Texas that at first I don't recognize- they just don't get as big. But Black Spot is a very bad problem there. Another odd thing, during Katrina parts of Metairei and Kenner were flooded by salt Water from Lake Ponchatrain backing up thru the pumps ( no back flow preventers )-around my former house thewater reached two or three feet and subside within a few days. When I went back to see my house( which was destroyed)-my roses were growing like mad and my Blood Orange Tree ahd nemerous large oranges on it. I imagine the salt water cleansed away some of the things that harm plants?...See Morekeeping beds/pots wet while away?
Comments (5)I agree with Trudi's suggestion. I picked up a pretty cheap timer a few years ago (Home Depot I think) when I was seeding my lawn and it has come in pretty handy. I would use it more often except that without a doubt one of my kids will turn off the faucet or mess with the timer. Reducing the maintenance of my seedlings is one of my next goals as well. As much as I would not mind staying home and tending to my plants all summer, my wife insists that we get out for a vacation or two with the kids! My general plan is to consolidate all my potted up seedlings into an area near my (very small) veggie garden so I can use one sprinkler on the timer to water both while I am away. I will also sink my pots into a bed of mulch to help retain moisture. I have planted out a couple beds in the past few weeks. Once they are in the ground and covered with mulch (I use shredded wood) they can go for several days in hot weather without extra watering. - Brent...See Morevesfl (zone 5b/6a, Western NY)
