zone 7(RIC-VA) Which David Austin to buy

need help in making a decision. Every time I look at DA roses, I simply can't decide. The max I can buy is 3 DA's. I want one that is very fragrant, English type rose, large(cupped, cabbage type, double petals), disease resistant, repeat bloomer(do not want stringy bloomers)..should do well in humid hot summer.
so far love how these roses look...
Eden, Abr Darby, Lady of Shalot, Shropshire lad...please post your suggestions, feedback if you've had experience growing them or other austins.

Of those you listed I grow Abe Darby, Lady of Shalott, and Shropshire Lad. Shropshire is stingy with blooms. He grows and is very healthy just doesn't bloom. He may want more cold winter than I can give him here. I also have Eden but she's just a baby that I bought as a band and hasn't bloomed yet.

Abe Darby is one of my very favorite DAs (and I have a lot lol). Gorgeous blooms, generous bloomer, fragrant, girly pink..does well here but wants to be very large which I don't mind at all.

Lady of Shalott is just beautiful here. Super clean foliage and beautiful coloring. Is a nice climber here. Blooms in flushes. Not very fragrant though. Her beauty more than makes up for it.

Lady of shalott is a very popular rose on this forum. Almost everyone has it or wants it. You can't go wrong with a rose that is that favoured by the majority.

I live just out of East Glacier Park, MT. Some sites list the hardiness zone as zones 3 or 4, but my experience is that it, for woody plants, you are gambling if you plant anything above Zone 2. Winters are not only long, cold and windy, but the chinooks make it very challenging to garden here. Temps in the winter frequently get below zero, sometimes even to 50 below fahrenheit. The winds make the conditions even harsher. My experience with perrenials is better. If mulch with pine needles or soil pep, I can have Zone 5. I have a Lady of Shallot, Litchfield Angel and Alnwick Rose. All three have been through three winters and have come back with flying colors, gaining every year. My research led me to believe that I might be able to grow David Austins if I picked only the ones that were rated Zone 4 and only if I bought own root roses that were not grafted. Every fall I mulch around the roses with with about one to one and a half feet of soil pep( a by-product of the logging industry that is composted fir bark). I then cover the soil pep with burlap and stake it down with staples used for drip systems. I also use small rocks to weigh it down. I have to be sure to do this because the wind would blow off the soil pep by winter's end if I didn't. I don't do any pruning before winter. All three plants usually die back to just above the soil pep. In the spring, as the bushes start to grow, I prune off any dead wood to just above a strong bud that is starting to grow. So far, all three bushes have done very well. This year, as of today, July 16th. they are about 2 and a half to 3 feet high and are coming into their first flush of bloom for the season. I can't stress enough that if you live in a cold climate you should only buy own root roses and mulch them in the fall. Good luck!!!! Lou Bruno East Glacier Park, MT

Hi Caroll, this is from Carol! :) I'm surprised Molineux had come back for you (even protected against the house). Had it lost any vigor? Mine survived in a raised area over one winter, but it was obviously not suited to its environemnt. It only regained two canes and had one flower. On the other hand, these should do very well for you. 1. Brother Cadfael - great if you have dry summers (you probably don't). It got tons of buds which were beautiful and large. The bush got up to 3 1/2 feet for me. It was quite floriferous!!! Only problem was that it balled quite a bit in the 3 summers before I moved. We had 3 years of tons of rain. With protection and in an exposed area it had about 1 1/2 feet of green cane for me. Although, under your eaves, it probably wouldn't get too much rain. In that case this would be a fantastic rose for you to get!! Can't remember if there's fragrance. I think there was. This is a great rose! 2. L.D Braithwaite - wonderful fragrance. Gorgeous flowers. Tons of flowers. Same area as Brother Cadfael. This one doesn't ball. The blooms last FOREVER. Get this rose!! My fav. 3. Eglantyne - very hardy - can't say much about it because I planted it in the fall, then it overwintered (really well) and then we moved. 4. Golden Celebration - my only rose to get a little bit of BS. But I love this rose!!! I bought it again for this house because the shape of the plant is arching - great for pots which I'm now using. Gorgeous flower, scent. Lots of blooms. Wow!! About 1/2 foot of green cane in an exposed area, but winter protected. 5. Mary Rose got about 6" of live cane - but very exposed area - planted in a huge raised bed right against the wall. It didn't get many flowers. I think it needed more time and a better location. 6. A Shropshire Lad. - survived its first winter with about 2 1/2 inches of live cane. Didn't even get to see a flower since we moved. But it did get large. 7. Abraham Darby - progressively got smaller and smaller after every winter until it didn't come back. But heavenly scent and gorgeous roses!!! But IMHO, if Molineux has good vigor for you, year after year - then you could try any Austin. Good luck!! I love pushing the zones too! Carol

Your bloom is lovely! I agree with Ken, talk to your local rose society for the best advice for your area. They'll be able to guide you in the right care for your climate. I don't think Austin roses are any different than most other roses in growing needs. After good soil they need sun, water and food. You certainly don't have to buy the Austin fertilizer unless you want to because you like it. Any good slow release should work fine. I've used Osmocote and Miracle Gro and others and they all work. If the pots have settled or soil has washed out you can add soil to the tops but you might want to think about maybe putting some kind of mulch on the tops instead. A good mulch can help with water retention in a pot. I use a fine pine bark mulch in my pots usually but there are a lot of choices and I'm not sure what's available in Florida.

Hi Moses, The bags have woven handles attached, so I think I may be able to move them around (only if wind and rain are too harsh) and when I put them in the car for move-out! I reckon I'll have to prune them and wrap them in plastic for the duration of the car ride. The pot dollies seem like such a good investment in the future for convenience, thank you for your continuous advice. Karen, As a short person, perhaps I will have to use QoS blossoms as cut flowers and snip them with long stems so that I can enjoy them lol! I've been planning on using the flowers in float-bowls, too. I'll keep in mind that a lot of DAs tend to get blackspot, thank you for the knowledge. Bummer, I guess we pay a price for beauty.

I don't know if you want reds/reddish purples but Munstead Wood is awesome here. His fragrance just wafts on the humidity. Great bloomer and always gorgeous. Major thorns are his only drawback..

Pat Austin is my best blooming Austin by far. I have two of her and she is blooming every day here. Not much for fragrance but I would not be without her. Ever! lol.

Lichfield Angel is another winner in my garden Blooms very well. Opens kinda peachy then fades to an old fashioned creamy white.

Crown Princess Margareta is doing a lot better this year. I have two of them as well. I think they are the kind of Austins that need about 3 years to get blooming well. They are big climbers. Nice fragrance and very fluffy puffy peachy colored. They are darker apricot in cooler weather and lighter in warm weather. Blooms in flushes and clusters of flowers.

Evelyn is very fragrant, very beautiful and old fashioned looking. She doesn't bloom as well as Abe D for me but she does for others so it just might be me lol. Love her though.

Teasing Georgia is a good bloomer here and very clean. Gets really really BIG. Blooming machines in flushes. Soft pretty yellow.

Lichfield Angel can get 5 to 6 inches here at times..Really excellent bloomer.

Ok one more of Abe Darby because he is just soooo YUMMY sometimes he gets kinda peachy

OK i lied...here he is being a very girly soft pink..I'm seriously in love with this rose :p (Lichfield angel is the creamy white rose behind him in the background)

You can buy more than 3 if you go to Hortico. :-) They have a lot of DAs for $18.99.

I grew Abraham Darby in Fl. It was a huge bush that constantly had dozens of blooms on it at all times. I just didn't like it that much. Don't know why, just one of those things. When I moved to N.E. GA. i grew it for three years hoping I would learn to like it. Everyone else loved it, except me. Replaced it with an OGR. Haven't missed it at all.

Lady of Shalott is a different story. One of my favorite roses in the garden. Big healthy bush stays covered in blooms all season long.
