Hole in oak tree that collects water and rots
Comments (47)I know Brandon-for those of us who have been engaged in this subject, A. Shigo is hardly news. And too, like you, I don't 100% agree with everything he said. What he represents to me at this point is the starting point for beginning to learn about tree care that is based on tree biology, not what Elmer across the street said! +oM ps......The tree wound in question tells a complete tale as to why decay was able to advance. Note the shape of the pruning wound-pointed on the bottom. That's where the weight of the limb caused the bark and some cambium to be torn off because the person who made the cut didn't know or care to do it properly. At this point, the tree's natural defenses were compromised and decay was inevitable. I know you know all this Brandon. Maybe, just maybe, someone who is still clinging to long outmoded ideas will take note. Maybe not!...See MoreRoses pruned to become self supporting - look like trees?
Comments (22)Thank you very much for nice comments. Vettin, Deuil de Dr Reynaud is doing great, but I do have to spray it. It is very similar to Mme Isaac Perier, which I also grow, but more vigorous for me. Could be just a difference between two particular plants. Fragrance is to die for and the blooms are huge. Some repeat, if you water it regularly. As with most long cane bourbons, for better plant health and bloom production the canes that flowered need to be removed next spring. It mostly bloos on 1-2 year old canes. Older wood became non productive and gets a lot of dieback. Most of these roses are 6-7 year old, some younger, some older. I add new roses every year and give away roses every year, so it is difficult to keep track of rose age for me. No special feed program, just fertilize in spring with some organics (city leaf compost) and a handful of 10-10-10. Some years I do additional feed in summer, with whatever I have on hand, alfalfa pellets, rose tone or 10-10-10. But this does not happen every year. My soil is read clay, quite heavy, you probably can make bricks from it :( As for prunning, I really do nothing special. The main thing is I don't think that pruning can harm roses. There is a lot of sentiment on this forum that pruning somehow is not beneficial. I just don't buy it. All my roses (old european oncbloomers, teas, chinas, hybrid musks, moderns, shrubs, rugosas, get winter/spring pruning to self supporting wood. I don't wait until they mature and start from their first spring, even if it was a band planted last summer. I believe that pruning for structure should start from young age. In my climate it works. It also worked for me when I lived in CT, KY and back in Europe. I remove twiggy growth and shorten canes, approx 1/2, sometimes more. Olga...See MoreHELP! Clear Glass Shower Doors w/ hard water stains
Comments (109)I tried every suggestion in this post and nothing worked for me. I live in New Hampshire and it makes sense stains will be different depending on where you live. Finally, I found the solution ...a pumice stone. There are several brands available online. I found this one in my local grocery and hardware store, and it's pretty inexpensive. Just use with water ..it didn't take a lot of muscle....just a little patience but it worked beautifully. I had gone so far as to get a quote for replacement shower doors and stumbled on this product just before I was ready to place the order. So glad I tried it because new doors were more than $800. Just wanted to share in case it helps someone else!...See MoreGlass Ornament & Entry trees are up!
Comments (15)Jane, that's funny about your daughter, mine will turn 16 this next March (shutter!) and I've got all the ornaments and decorations from her "unwanted" tree packed up. I know she'll use those one day when she has a daughter. Luvs, I absolutely LOVE decorating for Christmas...I think for me, I have always been a creative/artistic person, drawing, sewing, etc. But as the kids have gotten older and the business has grown, time for that has dwindled. My work allows me to create, but I'm on this computer all the time and there is no hands-on in that creative process. So, my Christmas decorating has become my hands-on! Now instead of taking a simple piece of paper and a pencil, I take a simple tree and bargain-basement priced leftovers.... Anyway, here are some more photos then of the entry tree: The ivory, gold and silver tasseled garlands and the shiny and matte balls, were all that I had on the ugly corner tree before last year. I got those about 8-9 years ago for 75% off. All the decorative ornaments, I have gotten over the last 2 years, after Christmas, again 75% off....The topper I got last year, and I want to say that I spent $12 at the most on that! Here are some closeups of the glass ornament tree:...See Morejoyfulsu
