Comments (51)Ah, I understand. Your GH is also a sort of conservatory, so appearance and the ability to see out of it is also a consideration. But if it's in full sun, you may need to add some shade plantings in your garden, perhaps some that would add an asthetic value along with shade. If you have the space to fit them, you might also benefit by a pair of outdoor (wet location rated) ceiling fans, to mount under the roof vents. The pair in my GH operate with very little electricity, are silent and do a great job of keeping the air moving. Not very expensive either; less than $100.00 each at the local home center. Comments (87)I bought an Electrolux double oven Model#EI30EW45JS2 on 4/27/12. I LOVE this oven and have been very happy, but started to see some rust spots. DON'T ignore these if you get them. I now have a hole which I saw when I started to remove the grates for self-clean. I was frightened and contact Electrolux who first asked, do you have an extended warranty?I don't anymore although purchased an extended warranty when I purchased it. They said they would check to see if they had parts to replace the liner (also rust starting on the upper oven) and after about a week, they called on Saturday to say they could not get the parts. Great. She also told me that they could do nothing until a service person saw it. I asked what would happen if I got a service person in and she said, well, it is no longer under warranty and you would be responsible. Well, thanks a lot since a) an extended warranty doesn't cover rust and b) there aren't parts to fix it anyway. She said they might give me 10% off an oven (probably with a gift card), so I have to spend more than $3000 on a new Electrolux which probably will do that same thing in 6 years and they are being generous giving me $300. DO NOT BUY THIS OVEN. It is so unbelievable discouraging to be treated like this. BTW, I had a Thermador range that is 23 years old and still works perfectly, although it no longer looks perfect. I will now be buying a KitchenAid double oven because Electrolux will not help at all. Beautiful oven, just don't expect it to last for more than a few years. Comments (34)If one heats silicone to destruction, the most likely solid product will be silicon dioxide, or quartz, the primary compound in glass. It can be dissolved in hydrofluoric acid, but don't try this at home, or anywhere else. The metal it has coated may be dissolved faster and the fumes are toxic. The good news, such as it is, is that if the unbonded "glass" dust is vacuumed up or wiped up, the residue is unlikely to get in one's food, and would not be more harmful than eating outdoors in a dust storm, or eating a mud pie if one were young enough. Wiping may be better than vacuuming, depending on how well one's vacuum keeps dust out of its motor. Moving glass dust -- much like regular dust but possibly finer -- is not what you need in the vacuum's motor or in the exiting air. I would be concerned about the dust that makes it into the convection fan passages that are difficult to get to. Some consideration of the cost-effectiveness of oven replacement may be called for. Comments (76)I think range hoods are a loud, bulky, filth-accumulating, waste of time and money. That's my opinion. If things get a little smoky, we just…horror of horrors…open the window. Or the back door. Or both for 5 minutes. Granted, we don’t do much searing or frying to begin with....I mainly eat slow-cooked soups for health concerns... But it's ironic, isn't it? - because Houzz users such as opaoneare recommending those bulky wall monstrosities to "properly remove carcinogens"... while (likely) consuming plenty more carcinogens found in his seared, smoked, processed, crispy, oxidized seed-oil pan-fried foods... and shaming people in this thread for not being "responsible parents" when choosing a downdraft... as 99% of the world has NEITHER a hood nor a downdraft. I lived in Mexico for a bit where it seems every person has a Chef in their family and no one uses ventilation hoods in their homes. I lived in Japan for about 2.5 years and again in 2018, and it was rare to find a venting hood in ANYBODY's kitchen... and their life expectancy is among the highest in the world... certainly more than ours. So if the concern is your health, I have a hard time seeing a causation between illness and temporarily sniffing a ribeye. OTOH, researches suggests that if your food produces a lot of smoke (searing, frying, smoking), and you CONSUME that food, you're eating toxic products like NFCs, trans-fatty acids (TFAs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), and more. Fried, charred, and slightly burnt foods can contain carcinogenic substances. Is it a guarantee you'll have health issues? No.... But neither is selecting a downdraft over an overhead vent. So...when people like opaoneshake his finger and scold people for having a downdraft, saying you should "care about the health of others" or that people are "irresponsible parents"... How would you like it if I'd say : "What on earth are you feeding YOUR children that you require such strong venting in your home in the first place???" Anyways, we love our downdraft. Go for it. Our cooktops faces a large window with a breathtaking view of our garden and lake, and it's much better than facing a bulky, expensive, overhyped machine above our heads....See Moreplllog
