Adding charcoal to the growing media of a Nepenthes
Comments (4)I use charcoal and orchid bark (actually fir bark, but it's for orchids) along with perlite, lfs, and peat. I'm not sure charcoal makes that much of a difference, but I am a big believer orchid bark. Both orchid bark and charcoal are very slow to break down. This leaves large open air spaces in the mix and allows me to keep neps on the tray method reducing frequency of watering and care. However, the most important advantage of this mix doesn't become apparent until it's time to replant. The charcoal and orchid bark basically fall apart when you take them out of the pot. This means it's much much easier to remove those delicate roots from the potting soil when it's time to replant....See MoreSoils & fertilizer....whats your opinion??
Comments (4)Hi alohohalani, My opinion. I live in the San Fernando Valley, lots of sand here. I go to the local nurseries and ask them what works best here. The Hawaiian bud and bloom 5-50 17 not sure on the other numbers, but the 50 is correct in the middle, has all the nutrients needed to grow plumeria where I live. Sego nursery doesn't even suggest anything else. So go with his ideas. Armstrong nursery also suggests this mix. The 10 10 10 ..lot of nitogen, might be ok for the roots.. but you might have to foilar feed for blooms. Personally would find foilar feeding a pain, then would be concerned about damp leaves to burn in sun..or stay too damp at night. I don't have that many plants, so can feed in the ground. Where does your friend live who suggests this, might make a difference in his area. cactus mix, don't believe it has any sand. I use it, lots of bark, soil.. but use it half and half with peralite. Makes it a loose soil. I will not use potting mix, holds moisture too much. Think you can put potting mix in the cactus soil..This has worked well for me. Everyone has their own ideas on growing plumeria, what to feed, what soil to use. Sure all are good for their plants. What is your soil where you live? Do you have a lot of blooms? Curious on others ideas. on when to quit feeding, don't know, think we are going a month late..due to the freeze, plants are behind. not sure. Karen B....See Morequartzite pool recommndations
Comments (4)No, we are using quartzite (flagstone) for our coping and waterline. (although will be looking into quartz plaster when the time comes!) Thanks for clarifying!...See MoreMore on Anthuriums Pics of Some Favs
Comments (13)Beautiful plants and blooms treehugger! Are most of these anth's full-size other than the one from Logee's? I'm seeing a lot of smaller growers locally but rarely see the big ones, which I prefer. The Coral Shibori is exceptionally nice! If you come across the website of the university that did the study on your soil mix, I'd be interested in seeing it. Thanks for posting the eye-candy. Russ...See MoreAmanda Tyner
