An Austin/shrub recommendation, please
Comments (9)I second William Shakespeare 2000--wonderful bloom. But you might also consider an Austin descendent bred by Clements called Braveheart--gorgeous red that never fades to purple like Shakespeare 2000. Braveheart is available at Heirloom Roses as a small band and at Roses Unlimited (where I got mine) in a much larger pot. If you use the search function above, you can probably find the pics of it that I posted several times before. Kate...See MoreDavid Austin Recommended Rose For Florida
Comments (20)I lived and grew roses for 20 years in Winter Haven and Port St Lucie for 10 years before retiring and moving to NE GA in 08. All the DA roses I grew were in PSL and grafted onto fortuniana root stock. Abraham Darby---Grew into a HUGE shrub. Bloomed profusely all year long Scepter d' Isle---I let it grow and staked the canes for the first 3 years. Once it got some strong canes under it this rose took off. Big, upright bush that blooms all year. I liked it so much I brought one with me when I retired. This is what it looks like in NE GA. It gets every bit this big in FL. Molineux---On fortuniana this blooming machine gets about 5 ft tall and easy 3 ft wide. It also does very well on it on root. 3'x3'. Own root, it does fantastic in a large pot. Pat Austin---What every one says. Can't go wrong with it. LD Braithwaite- should love FL. I got one from Nelsons on one of my trips to central FL. This is my bush that is 4 years old. Great grower and bloomer. Another great DA that loves Fl is The Prince on fortuniana. I had 2 by my front walk way in Port St Lucie. 6'x3' bushy bush always in bloom. Finding this rose is almost impossible. I lucked out and got 2 bush's from K&M before DA pulled the plug on it. If you can find bud wood, Coolroses might be able to do a "no name" custom graft for you. This is my 2 yr old The Prince. It should double in size this (3rd) year. It's already 3'x2', and the blooms smell fantastic....See MoreTHIS is why I order Austin roses from David Austin Roses.
Comments (32)Rebecca- your roses are gorgeous but so much work. I live in Massachusetts. It is so difficult to even dig a hole 10 inches deep with all the rock, boulders and ledge so I try to buy only own root roses. I have gotten some wonderful own root roses from DA and have some more scheduled for delivery next week. I hope they add more own root to their collections. I recently ordered 'Queen of Sweden' and 'Windermere' which is by far my healthiest DA rose and covers herself with delicate soft blush pink blooms from early summer till fall. She is cane hardy in my Z5b-6a garden. The only negative is lack of the "to die for" strong perfume scent that Austins are so known for. sharon...See MoreTell me about yellow David Austin roses.
Comments (30)PnP, I put in a black metal fence around the front part of my yard and plan to grow her on the part abutting my driveway. It's between her and Teasing Georgia... whoever gets to planting size first, but think the colour of JA might suit this place better. I hope to get Quicksilver to plant next to her to mingle a bit and loligag over the fence. I had planned to plant Annie Laurie McDowell next to her on the other side, but all my cuttings froze out. : ((((( My only concern is that her general flower shape will over shadow the more delicate forms of Cornelia and Felicia. I'll just have to see how it goes! : )) I have high hopes for this fence line. : )) The only other person growing her was in BC that I could find. It did GREAT there! Monarda, setting is everything sometimes, isn't it? Comtesse, I will read about first, but usually these bags are so cheap, I think it might be worth a try! If it does BS, at least my friend will understand why it takes me so long to decide on varieties. He's a very impetuous buyer and lucked out with his first roses setting the bar high. Until one has seen formerly beautiful roses completely defoliate, it's hard to understand....See MoreKarenPA_6b
