Lady of shallot doesn't flower

Hi,

In my weather, the infamous Lady of shallot doesn't flower. Not only me, I can say 90% of us here get a bush of rose leaves.

To eliminate the option, the LoS Rose are in those conditions:

1. In good care of experience rose grower/gardener

2. Nothing like fertilizer imbalance, since the same for every rose and they're in perfect health and flowering properly

3. The LoS rose is fine,healthy and bushy

4. As this is the experience for gardern in different location, most of us has tried our best to provide it best condition, and different condition such as in shade, partitial shade, morning sun, late afternoon sun, full sun. Also container rose and on the ground rose

My weather: hot, humid and sunny. Max tempurature is 39 Celcius. No winter whatosever.

The first year I had this rose, I got two flowers on it. I moved it to a pot and gave it half a day of sun. I did get more flowers that year. This year, I have her planted in the ground again and she will be in partial shade. I shall see how she does. Usually David Austin roses take about three years to really mature and bloom. It gets hot here too but only rains in the winter.

I have gothen explosive growth and bloom on LoS in both humid zone 9/10 right on the gulf coast and in semi arid zone 7 on the high plains. It has grown tremendously and put on a ton of blooms both years.Not sure what yalls issue could be. Shade is typically my issue when roses aren't blooming a,lot.

I have a Lady of Shalott. It is in the process of blooming now, but the flowers are not of a good initial color. They are rather washed-out looking. Based on what I have seen from other varieties, the color should improve as it gets more established. Summer Song improved this year in comparison. I just put the plant in the ground from its pot to try to get it established before the extreme heat arrives later this week. It should begin to look better in the fall if it reblooms well. Hopefully I can get a picture of it to post along with the other Austin oranges that I have.

I actually have all four of these varieties. This is the first year for Boscobel; it is trying to establish itself although it has bloomed a few times. I'm not sure what the verdict will be on it yet. Lady Emma Hamilton is a nice variety. It blooms regularly although not in large numbers of flowers. It has more of a semi-constant trickle of beautifully colored, blended orange flowers with a very nice smell. It sprawls sideways rather than get tall. Lady of Shalott is a heavy flowering variety when it gets established. It also gets quite large, tall and wide. It has the most flowers of any in the Austin orange group. Summer Song does not care for the heat. Mine have done a bit better this year than usual, but that is not saying much. Our weather last May included a freeze that clobbered everything. Summer Song's flowers were not all that nice this year although rebloom happened, and the flowers were quite small compared to what they are normally like in spring. The bush gets lanky with some long canes. The flowers are a pretty color and have a nice fragrance, but I would not recommend this one for my climate. If you are leaning a bit towards apricots and want an Austin variety, I would suggest also looking at Carding Mill. That one is a nice one. I hope this helps.

I am near you - about 3 hours from Galveston in east Texas. I love my Tess. I have her on a huge fan shaped trellis - she has very healthy foliage and lots of nice blooms. Two of my favorite Austins are Carding Mill and Abe Darby. Wollerton Old Hall, new for me last year, does get really big, don't find the blooms fragrant like Austin says, but they are pretty. Sophy's Rose is a really good one - healthy foliage, lots of big pretty deep pink blooms. Bishop's Castle is good. Lady of Shallot looks to be big. I have quite a few new ones that are healthy and growing - they will do better next year. Great big for me are James Galway and Scepter d'Isle - like them a lot. I have Lady Emma and Munstead Wood planted where they get full sun until 2pm - hope they like it there. I really like Ambridge Rose too. Love the blooms on Jude......mine is very small though. I am getting another Young Lycadis - my chickens were scratching in that bed and killed it. The color is a different, brighter looking pink that I really like. Englands Rose was new for me last year - it started off looking and blooming fantastically.....then it starting dawdling around. Am hoping it will get going again in the spring - it was really nice. I want to try Princess Alexandra of Kent - have heard good things about it. Do any of you all plan to try the new Austins? I want Boscobel, The Lark Ascending.......not sure about the others. caldonbeck, the photos are fabulous! Judith

I got LOS last spring. Its a grafted plant. It didnt bloom much last year. She grew a lot though. This spring I espaliered her on a piece of wire fencing strung between a few metal t-posts to try and get her canes more horizontal. That did the trick because she has been blooming in regular flushes this year. She is much larger now that in the spring when I took these photos. She is in mostly full sun and in a black plastic nursery pot still lol. She likes it that way!! There is a tree that casts shade on the far side one end of the plant, really late in the day about 4pm (left side of the photo). The majority of the plant (about 3/4th of it, including its pot, gets full sun All day.

Some roses do require cold chilling to bloom. The Austin Geoff Hamilton is notoriously stingy in warm climates, but does bloom reliably in Connecticut, where it does see real winters every year. You might look at the relationship between cold weather and blooms.

I grew LOS in zone 10 on the gulf, we never froze and it bloomed beautifully

Im in Florida. Its typically hot and humid here. Some summers we get some days that are 100F. We usually freeze a few nights during the winter. Most days are in the 70sF in the winter. LOS is very healthy here. The first year I had her I got a few small flushes of bloom. The second year I got several flushes of blooms. I have her espaliered on a 10ft wide fence..tied as horizontal as possible so she develops laterals and blooms on those. Then I either trim those laterals back so they can regrow and rebloom or I tie them down horizontally to get them to form new laterals and new blooms. She is definitely a climber here. I keep her in full sun. The more humidity you have, the more sun you can get away with. This applies to most plants.
