New leaves on rose wrong color

Some of the new leaves on my large climber are changing color from dark burgundy to orange with the center stem and veins green. This is not normal for this rose. I know its lacking some kind of fertilizer but not sure what. Thought maybe iron. I planted this rose 10 years ago and it has never had this before. Everything else looks ok

Stats: weather ..75 day 45 night

no rain for 3 weeks but have been watered on a drip

fert....fish emulsion, granule 10-10-10 and compost

Photos of the foliage would help with a diagnosis. "Drip" may not be providing enough water for the fertilizer applied and the low night temps might be affecting its availability, even with the warmer day temps. Check the soil to see if it seems moist enough. Often, extra water can help. Without water, fertilizer doesn't dissolve, doesn't get taken up well and/or builds to toxic levels in the plant. I'd post clear photos of the suspected issue first; check how damp the soil is and apply more water if it seems too dry, second.

People are supposed to get their vitamins from their food; plants get theirs from the soil. Neither should depend on supplements. A plant should be able to live under local conditions. Fortunately, roses have lived all over the world all by themselves without soil ammendments, fertilzers, bone meal, phosphates, etc. Their mid-range Ph tells you they are more generalized than specialized. They won't survive in all environments, but in most, and some classes do better or worse here or there (see the discussion on killing Bourbons in Maryland in the Antique Roses forum). You should never add supplements until you have had your soil analized. 'Kill' is the important part of 'overkill.' If you have had your soil analized or the plant is showing specific symptoms of a nutrient failure, supplement that one thing. If the plant has been under stress or neglect, supplements are the equivalent of taking vitamins when you're ill. I Super-Thrive new plants and transplants and give them a good starter soil and I dig in an all-purpose organic fertilzer twice a year--plant feast days (feasting is an important part of balancing a diet; nature provides 'feasts' which we generally do not allow in our gardens). Otherwise, if a plant can't live off the local mother earth, s/he needs a new home.

That makes me feel somewhat better. I had fears about planting so late in such hot weather but my excitement got the better of me and I just couldn't wait until the fall to purchase and plant. The rose is nice and cool on my covered patio area and I have watered it well this morning. Hopefully I can keep it alive for the rest of the growing season. Thanks for the reply!

midorit, ALL roses go through rest periods between what are known as "flushes" of bloom, and even though Knockouts are known for fairly continuous bloom, even they have down periods. And yours has been going through some trauma and stress. Don't overthink it, and don't kill it with love, lol. Keep it moist, not wet, and let it recuperate a while. Consider it normal for your rose to rest up to several weeks between flushes, depending on its health and the weather. When it finishes each flush, you can fertilize with a good rose fertilizer according to directions. Epsoma Rose-tone is good for long term health; a granular food is good for a quick boost. DON'T overuse the granular, it can burn the roots. But there are as many types of rose food as there are rose growers, lol. A time-release food works, too, and it's harder to overdo it. By the way, if that pot is sitting directly on the ground, it won't drain properly and you'll eventually cause the roots to rot. Raise it up on pot feet (or anything solid to get it off the ground) so the drain hole is unobstructed. Any Home Depot or Lowe's carries the nice terra cotta pot feet.

Is this downy mildew? What is wrong with rose leaves

I do not know what it is but mine have it also. Horrible spring weather. Very little sun, too many drippy days and cold. I did receive downey mildew thru the mail this year. This was the first time I had ever seen it. The box and I ran for cover after opening. Here is the best that I can say. Downey mildew does not cross main veins. It will travel in-between them. Then something I never knew before was to turn the leaves over. Then look for the sparsa spores. If it is downey mildew it will be there. On the underside of the leaf below the downey patches there will be white patches of spores. They can be hard to see so I used a magnifying glass. They look like tiny little white dots in patches. Yes my new rose had downey mildew. My leaves that look like yours do not have the sparsa on the back. Now is the perfect weather for black spot and anthracnose and my roses are now getting both. I've been no spray for quite a few years now and only purchase the healthiest of roses. Will sad to say that does not mean that they won't get anthracnose. I did learn last year that if I did nothing it was very hard on the roses. Maybe since conditions stayed good for anthracnose nearly all of last year. In order to get things under control I have already sprayed this season with Bayer disease control (not 3 in one). Good luck in your quest to keep your roses healthy. Interesting, Campv, I have the same problem this spring with some of my roses. The most interesting part in my garden is that one rose grows old new leaves looking like that and another one grows those along with green healthy looking leaves... I will take pictures tonight after work. One thing for sure, my soil is moist enough, on the wet side even.

2nd picture is the ugly
all on the same climber

My soil is wet enough, it may have been 3 weeks but the amount of rain we got was unbelieveable. Also I gave it water from the drip last week. Thanks for any answers you maybe able to provide

When my leaves yellow like that it's almost always because the roots are to wet. When my ground becomes saturated the roses can't take up nutrients. After drying up a bit leaves slowly green up again.

I was going to say that yellowing leaves is a sign of both too little and too much water. If you had a ton of rain that could be the problem. Just give them some time to green up.
