Crabgrass preventer- when to apply with strange temps.

Two weeks ago we had 6- 60 degree days in a row, we have been back to seasonal temps in the 40's since. I noticed weeds sprouting in my flower beds and along bed edges (black mulch, full sun, brick house) so I took a soil temperature and had 45 degrees.
Rule of thumb I follow is 50-55 degree soil temperature is time to put down crabgrass preventer, but, with the string of high temps have I missed my window and is it possible to have crabgrass already germinated? If I have, will freezing temps after germination kill it off? We had something similar happen last year and I missed my window it appeared. Any info is appreciated.
Thanks
