Climbing Eden Roses in Zone 5?
Comments (19)Thanks roseberri. I played it safe and planted New Dawn and Zephirine Drouhin on my large arbor out back(south side). I expect New Dawn to take off...not sure how quickly Zephirine will go, but it is a fairly large rose already and I didn't have much of a choice as it goes right by the walkway now that I have them both in the ground and can see how they sit. Both are blooming and doing fine though. Red and White Eden are still in pots. Regular Eden was sold out at the nursery. I feel like Red and White Eden are somewhat of a risk being relatively new plants(circa 2004) and hearing less about them, but I'll be quite happy if it works out. The spot I am putting them in is on the north side of the house, but far enough in front of the house that Red and White Eden will probably get more sun than any rose I currently have planted. You mentioned Eden would work for smaller settings, so I am only building a small 4'wide x 7'tall simple arbor for out front(haha just to make room for them). Something simple and just to walk through although with such a small yard it will probably become a focal point. If you are familar with Victorian Village in Columbus roseberri, then you can grasp the size of my small area. I'll have to keep everybody updated on how Red and White Eden do as Red isn't even an "Eden" genetically, and I believe White is a sibling of Eden. Both relatively new and I might wrap the whole arbor and roses with burlap this winter. Hard saying right now. I just want the arbor thrown up and the roses in the ground already! Can't wait....See Moresuggestion for yellow climbing rose for zone 5 (Iowa)
Comments (12)HMF has Golden Showers hardy to zone 3. I love this rose. It does get a bit of black spot in the hot humid southeast. But when it blooms, it scents the yard (or in my case porch, since I have it growing up and around my front porch ) which a delicate honey scent. Bright yellow blooms that open fully. I also have Teasing Georgia. Being an Austin, it has the puffy blooms. I'm not sure it would get to climbing status in zone 5 but it's still a very pretty rose. Mine is a monster this year....See Moreclimbing roses for zones 4/5?
Comments (16)I have this red climber which I have no idea what kind it is, got it about 3 or so years ago. It's canes seem to get about 6-8 feet, and it got a beautiful spring flush and now only gets a rose or two during the summer. but the canes are growing like crazy. at first I mistaken it for blaze, since the flowers looked like a blaze, but the canes didn't get as long and the leaves were slightly different. I have done nothing to it to protect it's canes during winter, it is in a southeast corner of the house.in fact it hardly had any winter dieback except at the very tips which I just pruned off in the spring. I wish I knew what kind it was so as to advise whether it would be good in a colder climate. I want to get golden showers and autume sunset but I read they are hardy to zone 6. So I am wondering can I still grow it here with minimal protection? You know just wrap the canes with burlap and a little straw in there to create air pockets. If I ever figure out what kind it is I will tell ya all, that way you know how hardy it is, and resistant to mildew, we had more rain this year than usual, and black spot tolerant, (it has a few spots but the overall bush is healthy looking and medium green.) the canes come out red at first then darken to medium green. What climbers are winter hardy and needs only about 4 or 5 hours sunlight which I can put on the north wall? RR...See MoreWhat climbing rose bush would look good here, zone 5?
Comments (32)My ND rose is doing ok, it has sent out a few really long stems..I’d say about 5’ -6’ long...but only like 3 of them so far...I put it in a place next to my ugly chain link fence so it could get as big as it likes because the more it hides that fence the better...this will be it’s 2nd full year in the new spot, so I’m sure I’ll see more growth from it this year...as far as that area...idk if I’m going to put any roses there...ideally I’d love to, but we already have a ton of bees near the pool and I think putting more flowers will just bring even more...I love bees don’t get me wrong, but I don’t love them buzzing around my head when I’m trying to relax by the pool...and my yard seems to have all the aggressive types..so not only cute little bumblebees..I have those huge black and white hornets, yellow jackets, and these tiny little black ones that sting like a b***h!! So I more want to discourage them there, than encourage them lol...which stinks because it’s a perfect area for a nice climber :’(...See Morejjpeace (zone 5b Canada)
