Climbing rose for arbor in Zone 5???
Comments (22)Thanks the morden man, they are pretty when they are in bloom.....just planted Blossomtime and Awakening rose bands next to them, hopefully in 3 years I will see some re-blooms out of the same spots. Also I will try deadheading after their first bloom this year.....I might buy another New Dawn and give it a try if I can find a grafted one at any local nursery...... I see you're in Ontario, there is a Niagara Parks Botanical Garden, it has over 2400 roses, I love there! Thanks again...See MoreClimbing Rose - Zone 5
Comments (6)My zone 5 garden gets a lot of winter wind (the meadow gets the full brunt of the North/Northwest wind). I grow a number of climbers, including New Dawn, St. Swithun, Abraham Darby, Eden, America, Rosariium Ueterson, Rosanna, Ramblin' Red, Morgengruss, Austin's Spirit of Freedom, Antike, William Baffin, John Davis, and Henry Kelsey. The Canadian Explorers are all cane hardy, William Baffin, John Davis & Henry Kelsey), as is Ramblin' Red. St. Swithun is usually cane hardy as well - all with no winter protection. Rosarium Ueterson and Rosanna are newer roses for me, but the canes stayed green last winter when I wrapped them in 3 layers of burlap. I suspect that Rosarium Ueterson may be cane hardy with no protection once it matures in a couple of years. America, Antike, Abraham Darby, Morgengruss and Eden usually have to be cut back to the snowline, and New Dawn varies, depending on the winter. Some years I have to prune her back to the snowline and other years there is more green cane. Aloha Hawaii and Peggy Martin are new climbers to my yard this season so I'll have to wait to assess cane hardiness on those two. America and Eden both perform more as shrubs than climbers, but America is very quick to begin blooming and is a consistent bloomer all summer long. Antike spends more of the summer trying to get very tall and doesn't bloom until late in the season (I may be removing her). Eden has a really beautiful bloom in late June and then only some sporadic blooms over the summer. St. Swithun is a nice rebloomer for me. as is Ramblin' Red, John Davis, Rosarium Ueterson, Rosanna, Abraham Darby, Spirit of Freedom and Aloha Hawaii. Hope this helps. Windy zone 5 gardens have a challenge with climbers, but there are some good choices out there, and a number of lovely roses that serve as 'short climbers' because of winter cane damage....See Moreclimbing roses for zones 4/5?
Comments (16)I have this red climber which I have no idea what kind it is, got it about 3 or so years ago. It's canes seem to get about 6-8 feet, and it got a beautiful spring flush and now only gets a rose or two during the summer. but the canes are growing like crazy. at first I mistaken it for blaze, since the flowers looked like a blaze, but the canes didn't get as long and the leaves were slightly different. I have done nothing to it to protect it's canes during winter, it is in a southeast corner of the house.in fact it hardly had any winter dieback except at the very tips which I just pruned off in the spring. I wish I knew what kind it was so as to advise whether it would be good in a colder climate. I want to get golden showers and autume sunset but I read they are hardy to zone 6. So I am wondering can I still grow it here with minimal protection? You know just wrap the canes with burlap and a little straw in there to create air pockets. If I ever figure out what kind it is I will tell ya all, that way you know how hardy it is, and resistant to mildew, we had more rain this year than usual, and black spot tolerant, (it has a few spots but the overall bush is healthy looking and medium green.) the canes come out red at first then darken to medium green. What climbers are winter hardy and needs only about 4 or 5 hours sunlight which I can put on the north wall? RR...See MoreClimbing rose for zone 5 colorado
Comments (25)Sorry I got back to this thread late folks, and thanks for the complements. Flowers my jaw drops every time I see your John Cabot since mine is about 4 years old and has barely reached knee high. Sure hope it's putting down roots and contemplating world domination like yours! Mad Gallica, that's really encouraging that Captain Samuel Holland is like Felix in its bloom cycles. Mine is just 2 years old and settling in, but it didn't seem to have a problem with the zone 4 areas of the yard. If mine can look as good as yours even once a year I'd be pleased. Thorny? Yep all of them, particularly Quadra. Fragrant? Dunno, I can't tell, but I doubt it. Last week I tried sniffing those perfume samples that come in newspaper ads this time of year and I could only smell about half of them at all. As for Victorian Memory, I grew it once a couple of years ago and it might not have gotten established in the summer or died over winter for some reason. I'll have to try it again from High Country Roses. I'm interested in how William Baffin settles in for you, flowers. I had that one on my order list one year from High Country Roses, and Matt on the phone paused after I'd said it, remarking that "William Baffin is more of a lifestyle than a rose". He said that the 6' height was wildly underestimated and to make sure he had a TON of space to play. I decided to pass at the time, in the same way I love but pass on Charles de Mills. Roses are enough of a lifestyle en masse for me to allow any one rose to take too much space for itself. Cynthia...See Moreiowa_jade
