Replace old foundation plants with what? Very long country house

We need to replace our original front landscaping which is now 15 years old. It was a very symmetrical plan - compact holly against the foundation with lime spirea in front then a row of 'monkey grass' for the border edge. Nandina on either side of the steps. We are looking for a plan with lower maintenance. I like shrubs in their natural form; I did not like the trimmed look of the holly. We are in middle Tennessee. Front of house gets hot afternoon sun. Suggestions appreciated.
