The current pediment slope of 12 in 12 is severe. There houses were modeled after English structures that were modeled after Greek & Roman temples that would be of considerably lower slope. The same goes for the gable or hipped roof slope of a Georgian or Federal (Adam) stye house. However, Colonial Revival houses often have 12 in 12 sloped hipped roofs that are truncated and capped with a very low sloped pyramid roof that can't be seen from the ground. This allows a much larger third floor area, less deep dormers and avoids the oddly French looking tall hipped roof. start with some idea books about what exteriors you like. come back here and show us. Your pictures will allow us to help you speak the language and verbalize what you are trying to achieve. Your current elevation sketch, as noted, isn't southern really at all - it looks like the builder has a book of plans and he's showing the elevation options and asking you to 'pick one'. I suspect that his architect is a designer, and will make minor modifications to existing plans that get built over and over. Find what you like, then compare to where you are now and see if you CAN get to where you want or need to regroup.

Is this the main street view of your home? The reason I ask is that your roof is practically invisible, which is a bit freeing. That said, I agree with Team Mid-tone grey/charchoal. The gray family is MUCH easier to work with going forward and even now, the shutters on your house seem to have an almost blue undertone to their blackness. Dark Walnut won't be bad, but eliminating brown from the mix would be better. One proviso about mid tone grays. The lighter the colour, the more obvious the undertone.
