Crazy weather...

It's been unseasonably warm now all week - reached 80° yesterday. Forsythia is coming out, daffodils are blooming, flowering crabs and star magnolias are in full bloom, and some trees and my lilacs are even budding. My azaleas are getting back their leaves.

Cold front came through last night. It's 35° today!!!! Going to be cold a few days, then in the 60's and 70's later next week.

As I heard when I first moved here 33 years ago, "If you don't like the weather in KY, wait 15 minutes and it will change!".

Oh, the Inconvenient Truth of it all! Chicago summer temps are up two degrees over the last century. It was 70F last week -- record high.

Had a few windows open until just a few minutes ago. First thunder storm, complete with several good rumbles and flashes, just rolled right over. Luckily I was in room with open window as curtains started flapping with rain blowing in!

Here in western Pa it hit 80F yesterday after several days in the mid 70's. It was wonderful, but I suspect its going to hurt my pear trees. I have 2 and their just turning 3 this summer. At one year I had lovely blooms and 3 pears, last year we had a few days of warm weather and they budded to soon and the cold snowy winter hit them so no pears. This will probably happen again.

Yep, I am fairly confident that there will be more blooms to come. Mine tend to put out new bud growth for around 6 weeks - some of the earlier blooms will have fully swollen nectaries while new growth is still coming forth from the base...and most of the stray early starters have been single blooms so I am enjoying the show and looking forward to a second act. I had been rescuing seedlings from a variety of sources - friend's gardens mostly, and was astonished at the variety since I grow mostly species and just the common (and slightly dull) greyish pink orientalis. Apart from one cherished yellow, I paid little attention to the lenten roses but was astounded to see frilly doubles, deep slates and plums, a couple of pure white (not niger), gloriously vivid lime green and a beautiful bright red...obviously scrounged from gardeners who are happier to splash the cash than this tightwad cheapskate (who has paid money only once in a couple of decades...for the aforementioned yellow)..

Have had triple digit heat index for past several days... could go into tomorrow or Tuesday. Yesterday, seemed like every 15 minutes of so, that sever t-storm warning was blaring on the TV. The high winds, quarter-sized hail, roof/tree damage... luckily didn't materialize though it di get really dark a few times. I like summer but frankly, ready for fall. With no $$ to speak of, what good is 8-10 weeks of no work anyway. I was ready for school to start back up again after the 4th.

Brrrrrr, that looks cold Richard! We have had 60 mph gales last night and today, I hardly got any sleep it was frightening. My pergola is now leaning dramatically and I've gained a ton of twigs and debris....and also a double section ladder from my next door neighbours scaffolding overnight! Snow is forecast for tomorrow and Friday...our first this season. Nice clivia btw, mine is just beginning to show some flower clusters :-) edited to add....its a hippeastrum isn't it, not a clivia, silly me! I have several of those too! Stay safe. Gill

We had a glorious couple of days in the 60's. Crocus were blooming and tulips are pushing up. Haven't checked to see if the daffodils are peeking up yet. Thunderstorms rolled through with high winds, lots of rain yesterday and today we are back to winter. Snowing this morning which covered the ground and then disappears quickly till the next round of lake effect snow blows through. Many of the daylilies are growing already which is not a good thing. I'm keeping the dead foliage on top for a few more weeks before I start cleaning that up. Hopefully the deer stay away. Suppose to have this down and then back up temp type of weather this coming week.

16° when I left for work yesterday. 20° today. On the news this morning:

"

If you thought the worst of winter was over, you were wrong.

The National Weather Service is calling for up to 8 inches of snow
by Monday night in the Spokane area and even more in the mountains and
the northern areas of Eastern Washington and North Idaho. Winter weather
advisories have been issued for the region until 3 p.m. Monday.

The snow is expected to begin overnight into Sunday, with
accumulations of 2 to 4 inches Sunday and another 2 to 4 inches on
Monday. There may be a brief lull in the snowfall Sunday evening. The
mountains could see a total of 6 to 11 inches this weekend.

The heaviest snowfall is expected in the Washington Palouse and North
Idaho, which includes Moscow, Pullman, Kellogg, Tekoa, Oakesdale and
Wallace. The forecast calls for 6 to 14 inches of new snow through
Tuesday evening. The winter weather advisory in those areas doesn’t
expire until 10 p.m. Tuesday."

Been a long winter for us, so far, and looks like we're not done yet.

The older I get, the longer winter seems to last, and the colder it seems. BRRRR

Winters are warmer as are every other season of the year. 80 here yesterday, 36 now.
