opinions please: change in bathroom plans
Comments (7)Hi Barb & all, I decided to put the same spalted white elm that is on the ceiling on the floor of the bathroom (and adjacent kitchen) I think it'll be pretty. I still want to use beadboard but I like the wainscoting idea better than using it from floor to ceiling. so tomorrow I'm going in search of wainscoting and in search of white paint samples. I have read there are beadboard tiles which might be a good idea since the bathtub will be next to th e wall, so I'll look for those as well. A couple questions: Where does one find beadboard tile? with regarding white paint choices: since the ceiling and floor will have warm honey toned wood any suggestions as to what will look good? The bathroom has two windows but they are both well shaded by trees outside. I will be picking up paint chips to see what looks good in the room. I have no experience with white paints so if you can help point me in the right direction it might help shorten my search. thanks! Susan...See MoreLayout of Small Galley Kitchen - opinions please!
Comments (0)Hello all, This is my first time posting to the forum, so thanks in advance for any guidance you all have to offer!! I am moving forward with a full remodel of an original 1940's kitchen. The plan is to have all major work done by August 1st. Pro: I have a fantastic, solid contractor and also an experienced professional who can modify and install IKEA cabs. Con: I am on a tight budget: ~25K to cover all labor, materials, appliances, hence IKEA cabs. Or maybe maybe something from green demolitions? I have attached drawings by an architect friend. The wall separating kitchen and DR will be removed. Door between kitchen and LR will be walled closed to provide more functional wall space in kitchen. Structural problem: the window on the south side next to the back door is lower than counter-height. And the depth between the wall and the molding for the window is short. Appliances: Fridge will be Frigidaire all-refrigerator. Induction cooktop (GE? Bosch?) KitchenAid dishwasher Likely no oven (my toaster convection oven is plenty) Microwave of some inexpensive kind. Demolition starts late next week, and I am suddenly questioning the architect's design: The custom open shelving does not help with economizing. I'm not convinced there is enough storage space in her drawings. I love the open look created by eliminating all or most upper cabinets. I find the varied height of the upper cabinets to be too busy. I like strong horizontal lines, especially in a small kitchen. Would love any and all ideas on the layout! Happy 4th, all! Tracy Image link:...See MoreNeed opinions on some changes...please help
Comments (44)I'm a novice at naming styles (the usual limits of my decorating vocabulary have been "that's nice") but if I were to give it a shot I would call the buffalo check a western/country/rustic/log cabin look. I think your names for your usual style are pretty good - French, traditional, also maybe formal, a bit dressy. For me, those styles don't have an intersection point with each other, but maybe for other people they do. At the moment with those drapes in the living room, it strikes me like wearing sweat pants and high heels together. That is to say, some people do it, but that doesn't make it a good thing :-) The valance at the "ledge" strikes me as good whatever you do to cover the window, because without it the window is so stark compared to the kitchen immediately adjacent. Comments (25)Holligator DH loves the whole look but is still leaning toward the custom panel. Somehow he doesn't go for the beadboard when we see it IRL. Thanks again for the pic. Cheril I love the kitchen in the link you posted. How cool is that. We had a kitchen with the same look but it was the real thing, barn wood, very worn, different colors of paint. It was in a log cabin on a lake. The cabin was moved log by log from another county. It was the greatest place to live with the exception of the gargantuan bugs. You are right about the width of the cabinet to the left of the dw. It is 29" and the dw is 24". I really need symmetry so that is something I will have to mull over a bit. Your suggestion of the bank of drawers sounds very interesting. Do you think 5" will make it look really asymmetrical? Live wire I did check with the cabinet company and they told me they can retrofit a panel (whatever configuration I want) on the dw and it should be flush with the cabinets on either side. I understand what you are saying about the glass doors and I really wanted that as we were designing the kitchen. However since our kitchen is not that big I needed the cabinet space for dishes, etc. I couldn't justify giving up the storage space for the display shelving. I suppose I could have gone for some opaque glass but I didn't think of that at the time. I don't want to change the upper doors now due to cost and the extra storage we have there. So I have to work around that. I agree that we need symmetry and that is what I am trying to achieve with the dw panel. As someone else said, it seems disjointed to me with the ss dw. I find it extremely interesting that you suggested a different countertop in this area. Because again that was my original intention. We actually had the soapstone cut right at the exact place to remove that section and replace it with a slab of carrera (sorry if I spelled that incorrectly) marble. I posted here (Cabinet Tweakorama) to get opinions and almost every response was not to replace the soapstone with the marble. But it is still an option for us as we did not bond the seam in the soapstone there just in case we changed our minds. Of course the marble was another additional expense but I agree with your observation that a break in the counter would further delineate the "hutch" area. I was thinking that the backsplash panel and corbels would make a strong enough connection between the upper and lower cabinets. Thanks for the thoughtful response. Sdionnemoore Wow another good idea. I had not considered the option of another cabinet under there at all. I think that would look awesome. Would I lose most of the countertop space there? afr The cabinet company makes custom panels so they assured us it would look integrated. I was also concerned about that....See Moreingrid_vc so.
