HVAC Replacement: Furnace and Heat Pump Questions
Comments (22)ryanhughes, The Trane setup with 80% 2-stage Var and 13 SEER, plus indoor cased coil, new thermostat, equipment pad, 4" media filter and labor comes out to $6077. The Goodman setup with 95% 2-stage Var and 16 SEER, plus Cased Indoor coil, new thermostat, equipment pad, 16x25 MERV 11 Air filter and labor comes out to $6098. (Special friend discount) The EverRest setup, which I am not considering anymore. 80% 2-stage no variable speed and 13 SEER, plus coil, thermostat, CAP-100 filter and labor is $6957. TRANE vs Goodman. Trane probably has a better reputation, but in my scenario I may go with the higher efficient Goodman. I'm not 100% sure yet, but definitely getting there....See MoreNew 2nd floor remodel HVAC - gas furnace v. hydro air
Comments (1)If you have the capacity on the boiler I'd stick with hydro-air. However, nowhere do you mention AC in your post. I lived in MA for 25 yrs and you want de-humidification. I would suggest you look at a mini-split heat pump for your addition. Much easier to run small line sets rather than ductwork and the system will give you excellent heat as well as cooling. Mini-splits are very popular on the Cape. It is a fine place to live....See Morehelp: new hvac or add heat pump
Comments (1)I certainly wouldn't do the 3 ton XL16i. I'd go with a good, properly-sized single-stage unit. If 2 tons is what your home needs now for max design conditions, I agree in not going with the 2.5 ton unit; although 1/2 ton probably wouldn't cause you significant problems, it's best to design for what you have now if home improvements several years down the road are uncertain. So I would be considering either the 2 ton or 2.5 ton, whatever you and your contractor decide is best. The XL14i was discontinued in R-410A, so I would double check what model you'd be looking at. I would avoid the older R-22 units and get a system using the new R-410A refrigerant (like the XL16i, except that's not a unit I recommend). The XL16i isn't a stellar performer in my opinion, more so in the heat pump model. The difference between high/low isn't great, so your low stage would be oversized most likely, and the dehumidification wouldn't be great in that unit either compared to Trane's single stage units. The XL15i is a very good unit. Another thing is that the XV90 is gone as well; it's now the XV95, unless you're looking at the XV90i with the built in electronic air cleaner "CleanEffects" but I'm certain your dealer would have told you, since it's a selling point. So in summary I think you need to get all model numbers to know what you're getting....See MoreReplacing HVAC heat pump &air handler system
Comments (14)Tigerdunes,thanks for responding. House is 2125 s/f ranch. As stated above have 14 yr old 3ton Goodman R-22 heat pump with bad compressor. When it was working it seem to work well, except in extreme hot & cold would have to raise or lower thermostat to keep up and would run more. And you would feel cool air fist coming out of vents before heating. Never had a problem with air handler, 27 yr old Carrier, which is in the attic, except for a capacitor. The heat pump had condensor fan replaced, some capacitors, and last couple years had hard start on it. I was also told the line set would not have to be changed on the XR15, but according to specs on net for 3 ton Goodman, it has 3/4 and 3/8 as opposed to specs on XR15 which is 3/4 and 7/8? What size heat strip do you suggest? Your thoughts on changing the 27 yr old ductwork. If so, size and type recommended. Same size as existing or is size of duct related to type system/size system installed?...See Moremike_home
