Extend new car, rust proofing and car loan insurance ...
Comments (6)These are not "shady" deals, but I think that all 3 favor the dealership, and not the auto owner. 1. Extend the warranty from 5 to 7 years for $1480 and get the money back if no claims. This is a free loan of $1480 to the dealer for 7 years and it probably does not cover much, maybe just the drive train. These parts are already warranteed for 5 years. What happens if the dealership changes hand, goes out of business, or re-incorporates before the 7 years is up? These days, auto dealerships are very fluid and a long term, fixed business arrangement for 7 years is more rare than new dealerships. Do you thnik you will own this vehicle for 7 years? What happens to your money if you replace this vehicle within 5 years? 2. Rust proofig for $848 or more option at $1248. The time to add rust proofing to a vehicle is when it is new and the surfaces are clean. This one is a maybe. Some sources say it is wasted money. It all depends on what is done. If it merely duplicates the coatings already placed by the manufacturer, it is not very helpful. It may offer some protection if you live on a gravel road where the undercarraige gets pelted with stones on a regular basis. If they add coatings to the interior of the doors, be careful here. Too much in the wrong place can gum up the workings of electric door locks; It can plug door drains. If you live in the "rust belt" where road salts are used extensively, it may some added value. This one is a judgement call. 3. Accident and health insurance. This is assurance (to the dealer) that you'll have cash to pay off the loan in case of debilitating accident or sickness to you. Very likely, it will be written to the effect that in case of accident or illiness, the car loan is the first item to be satisfied. If you are employed, have adequate health and life insurance, this is not needed. For a long trerm loan, say 5 years, the dealer (and loan agency) is very anxious to make sure that the loan covered....See MoreBuying a new mattress....is harder then buying a new car
Comments (53)I did purchase my new King mattress from the same local manufacturer that made my custom rv mattress. I love this company, I was able to tell him exactly how I wanted it to feel on top and how much support and firmness for the core. I did get the individual covered separate coils for less movement and the bamboo top fabric because I sleep hot and the bamboo fabric is great for me. It has the euro top instead of the pillow top the old one had. It is just beautiful too. I really debated if I should get a latex layer in the top, ended up not getting it, but if I was doing it again it would be worth the extra money. I love my latex pillows so much I think I would like the latex layer. I absolutely did not want any type of memory foam I can't stand it. I do have the option to let him take it back and add the latex layer still. Another great thing about this place! I have recommended them to several of our friends, especially those with an rv. And the prices are fantastic. So far I have not had any back pain like I was having from the old one. Super comfortable and extremely supportive. I especially wanted the heavy solid foam sides which will support you sitting on the edge or pushing on it getting up and out. I am a side sleeper and I tend to sleep on the edge of the bed, it supports me completely. I could jump on my side and never move my husband's side. The only thing that I wish was different is how much higher this one is. Thank goodness my sheets still fit. I have no idea if they ship out or not but I know they deliver all around the Houston area....See MoreBad driver/new car/bumper scrape/repaint?
Comments (31)Better than what happened to me. I was walking across the parking lot toward my car when I saw a lady in her huge SUV parked next to my, walking around her vehicle to look at mine. She was pulling into the spot next to me and nailed my bumper, rear panel, passenger door and front door as she was pulling in. Fortunately I was right there so she couldn't deny or get away. She tried saying the damage to her front bumper was from when she hit some garbage cans and I informed her that her silver paint was all over the side of my car. (What I couldn't understand is how she hit my car and proceeded to park anyway. I mean wouldn't you normally stop at the sound of the first crunch rather than keep going?? I mean she scraped the whole side of my car!) Then she confessed that she'd also not pulled her vehicle in the garage far enough and closed the garage door down on her car. She complained that the vehicle was just too big for her and she couldn't judge how big it was. I agreed she'd be better off with a smaller one. I finally got my car back. So fortunate to have a terrific body shop and they negotiated with the insurance co. so they paid in full. My car looks better than new now, they did such a great job! But I did have to live without it for 10 days. I guess the moral of the story is, if you get a new vehicle, presume it's larger than you think so you don't hit things....See MoreNegotiating a new car purchase - any tried & true tactics?
Comments (95)Right on, gscience! There's a whole world of auto enthusiasts out there filled with good, helpful folks who are passionate about cars and want to share their knowledge and experiences with others. Autocross looks like an absolute blast as well. This sort of thing is probably in my DNA though, having been raised by a father who was never without a fast car (he raced for a time), and even as an octogenarian drives a collector's Porsche. It's a rewarding (albeit expensive) hobby and I think most people understand that (or at least understand when they DON'T understand and refrain from dissing something they're ignorant about). ;)...See MoreTexas_Gem
