Can I feed worms bacon grease?
Comments (9)Maybe in the future instead of us having to buy or make a compost bin, a tumbler bin, a worm farm, a biopod (for BSFL) it will all come in a matched harvest gold or avacado green kit. If we are interested in not wasting resourses of kitchen waste it leads to an interest in leaves, grass, cardboard, and even grease. In the olden days grease was valuable for making soap and some people still do. I can see not wanting even grease to go to waste. In the olden days I knew someone who kept the grease in a covered can and added a spoonful of it to their dogs dry food bowl to encourage a shinny coat....See MoreSpeaking of Fried Cabbage and other dishes
Comments (17)As a Chicagoan that was transplanted to Louisville and Nashville and Memphis for 20 years, it was difficult for me to understand the macaroni and tomato thing at first. I mean, I'd never seen such a dish. Elbow macaroni, stewed tomatoes, a bit of vinegar and a pinch of sugar. Was this a mistake? Where was the meat? The cheese? The basil?? It is just one of those regional things, I think. I got the same look from the southerners when I opened up the package from Usingers in front of the Memphis neighbors. Inside, we found sausages and cheese curds. A neighbor held up the bag of curds and asked what it was. I told her and the entire room laughed at my curds. (one woman even gagged!!)...See MoreBaking 'grease' (to grease the pans)
Comments (14)I had this saved from a while ago as "Pan Release" on my hard drive. It works great! Always good to share info like this with folks who might have missed it! The original recipe is from recipezaar, and one of the notes said that "for baking recipes using chocolate you may use 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder in place of white flour or 1/4 cup each cocoa powder and flour --- this may be increased or decreased sucessfully just make certain that all three ingredients are the same amounts or the mixture will not work as well." NOTE: You can make half a recipe and it works well. Some folks have kept this in the fridge for a loooooong time, and it's still good! Recipe: 1/2 cup corn oil or canola oil or vegetable oil 1/2 cup vegetable shortening, room temperature (Crisco shortening is good) 1/2 cup all-purpose flour Place all ingredients in a mixing bowl. Using an electric mixer beat until mixture has increased in volume slightly and resembles marshmallow cream. Place in a container with a lid and store on the counter or in a cupboard (in hot weather it may be refrigerated). The mixture tends to separate slightly upon sitting in your cupboard or refrigerator so mix before using, then brush pans using a pastry brush or a clean paper towel.
