Personally I think I mini backsplash over a pedestal sink would look strange. The only way I think it would work would be in the case of tile, where you did it around the room as a wainscotting kind of application, which then went a little higher than the sink to act as a backsplash. Just my opinion though. I say do what you like! You're the only one who needs to love it.

I have to agree with lascatx, the combination with the oak cabinets may not work. When you get samples of the marble backsplash tiles, also get some other samples that call to you while you're at the tile store. Choosing tile is often a matter of bringing home different samples and seeing what works best in your space. Once you get the samples post again with pictures. Have fun. This was definitely a fun part of my remodel. It means you are so close to the end!
