mudhouse - there was probably 10 inches of snow on the roof. I recognize that I should have gone out earlier and knocked it off but I'm a bit overwhelmed with life and business at the moment, and I simply didn't think about the risk of the weight on the roof. Actually, most of the snow we had received in the storm was very light and fluffy. The problem developed, I believe, after the storm broke and the snow began to accumulate moisture & weight as it started to melt. busy1 - I employed the same reinforcement of 3 lengths of EMD across the interior. That's nice for stiffening the walls but didn't make a difference in terms of this issue. ole_dawg - thanks for telling me about a guy on ebay. I'll have a look. If you happen to have the seller's name, I'd appreciate it. rosepedal - the 1x? material you have running from front to rear is sort of what I have in mind, but my thinking is that it needs to be centered between the ridge and the wall. Additionally, I would really want a minimum of one sturdy post, such as a 2x4, running vertically between those and the ground. This way there is some strength that prevents those boards themselves from bowing under the weight. As mudhouse mentions, the unsupported centers of the roof studs are the weak point. Nice looking job. Looks very sturdy. I like the 10X12's because I grow orchids and hang them from the roof, so I need the extra highth. Thay are good greenhouses for the money. I'm getting ready to get another 10X12 to add to the 2 that I alreay have hooked together. So when I done I will have 10X36 for alot less tham other manufatures. And in Florida it works.

I bought the OptiVent opener from Charley's. It wasn't ridiculously expensive (appx $50), and it definitely seems to work. ...Even when temps topped 100* - I think 120* was the max - and the Optivent performed just fine. I did end up removing the vent opener after a few weeks, however. During my "Ventilation Experimentation" I determined that I wasn't getting enough cross-ventilation w/the vents open. I had to open a panel on the opposite end of the GH and vent out the top/front in order to get the proper air-flow. At least that was my experience.. As they say, "YMMV," but I can honestly say that I was pleased w/how the Optivent performed.... HTH -Nancy P.S. Link to my website, below, has photos of the Optivent. Thanks for the welcome I have taken pictures of the build in progress. I'm trying to sort out the pictures and then figure tech stuff for posting them. This winter I hope to get a head start on my fuchsias and geraniums for my hanging baskets. The greenhouse will let us start flowers and vegies from seed that we wouldn't find in our local Nurseries. I also like the idea of pushing my zone and seeing what we can get growing. We have our first snow on the ground early this year, so pushing the zone seems a little ambitious. The fun of gardening, if it works take credit for being talented with a green thumb. If it fails blame it on the weather. Hill60
