HFGH newbie

Hi everyone.

I've been a lurker for a very long time and thought it was about time I introduced myself. I live in the Pacific Northwest on Vancouver Island. DH and I both like gardening, we call it playing in the dirt, having a greenhouse will allow us to play year round.

We bought two 10x12 HFGH last August. I plan on getting one up running and getting the kinks out first before the other is assembled. The first is assembled but not yet weather proofed. It has survived a couple wind storms with no ill effects thanks to all the great tips and information from this forum.

Hello Hill60, and welcome. Congratulations on getting your first one up and assembled. We started ours in late July. My DH and I agree we could do another one much faster and with no trouble, now that we understand the kit. Just think how smart you'll feel as you zip through the second one!

Good point about the warranties! Hmmm, my GH roof is almost always covered with an endless supply of desert dust. I can hose it off, but it will be covered again in no time (in spring, anyway.) I have had a lurking concern that IF there is a panel deterioration problem, it may be heat related. I read a post on another forum last year from a Tucson GH owner who'd purchased two 6x8 kits to use the poly panels in his own homebuilt wood-framed GH. He posted that after a few years the roof panels were brittle and breaking. I know he doesn't use his GH in the summer at all, and I figured his roof panels must have been subjected to extreme temps (if it's 110Â° outside, imagine what it may be inside an uncooled GH in Tucson, especially the air right under the roof panels...140Â°? 150Â°?) I hoped my plan to use the GH year round might help me to escape the same fate (I'm hoping I can keep the temps in mine under 100Â°, although most of my plants will tolerate that.) Still, I note that the three mentions of this problem so far (the Tucson person, yours, and Jamesy40's) have all happened in southern states. If heat is a problem, mine will likely fail sooner than some...so I'm keeping an eye on this trend! I guess it could be an opportunity to upgrade the roof to 6mm at least, eh? :-) Sheri

Sherry and fellow company are awesome people... I could care less if they think this is a HFGH thread. If it wasnt for people like all of you. Us newbies would be in a compost pile along with our greenhouses. Keep the information coming...... My door was wrong also and by the way the door parts were sitting on my porch when I got home from work today. What a joke only took a year from china..... Hi all. I'm a newbie here having just discovered this forum last week. (About one month after I had purchased and put together a 10x12 HFGH). I don't worry too much about stability since I mounted the GH on treated 4x4's each of which have two 36" rebars going through them and into the ground; however, we had a sudden storm yesterday with 40 to 50 mph gusts which successfully resulted in ten panels seperating themselves from the GH walls and ceiling. I managed to retrieve them all, (I think) but now must engineer a solution which will prevent the panels from flying off in the first place. Any suggestions? Are sheet metal screws adequate for winds of from 40 to 50 mph? Tape? A different kind of clip? I would really appreciate some help here. Thanks, halinva

Yeah they are very sturdy, Dave! I'm very happy with it :-) Okay Riddle Me This, Garden-Webbers: I bought a roll of window screen so I can, well, keep the friggin' bugs out! How do you "screen" the upper vents? Seems to me that - even if you don't have a self-opener - you still need to be able to reach up-and-thru the vent from the inside of the GH. i.e. to use the vent-support-thingie to prop the window open. Even worse w/the self-opener since the unit is pretty cumbersome, size-wise. I'm kind of envisioning that the screen should fit along the 3 "sides" of the vent and be 'stuck-down' to the roof (/framing) of the GH in some fashion (it'd undoubtedly "pooch-out" around the sides when the vent is closed). But I haven't quite figured out how I'm gonna finagle that. Doorway screening shouldn't be a problem. I've seen those dangly doorway screens w/magnets @ Charley's (and other sources), so I'm not so worried about that. But I am definitely curious to know if anyone has screened the upper window-vents and how that was accomplished (Pictures, anyone??). Thanks, in advance, for any suggestions! -N

Thanks for the welcome

I have taken pictures of the build in progress. I'm trying to sort out the pictures and then figure tech stuff for posting them.

This winter I hope to get a head start on my fuchsias and geraniums for my hanging baskets. The greenhouse will let us start flowers and vegies from seed that we wouldn't find in our local Nurseries. I also like the idea of pushing my zone and seeing what we can get growing.

We have our first snow on the ground early this year, so pushing the zone seems a little ambitious. The fun of gardening, if it works take credit for being talented with a green thumb. If it fails blame it on the weather.

Hello Hill60,

Congratulations on getting your greenhouse set up. Will you be starting your fuschias and geraniums from seeds? Or do you take cuttings?

Also, I like your philosopy...if it grows take the credit by saying it's your green thumb, if it dies blame it on the weather and mother nature. ha ha ha. You are good girl! ha ha

All my pelargoniums and fuchsias started out as hanging basket stuffers. I usually just overwinter the mother plants. This is the first year that I have attempted taking cuttings from them. I'm also going try starting pelargonums from seed.
