Disappointed in new air fryer--do you like yours?
Comments (13)I think the big problem is that you started with too many adjustments. There was another thread here recently praising an air fryer so much it almost tempted me. :) The way it works is by blowing hot air, like a compact, powerful convection oven. Some have a stirring want for making chips. I can do the same thing in my wall oven and use tongs to stir. :) The whole point of the air fryer rather than the wall oven is to be compact, and super easy and not tie up your oven (they were invented for making French fries in tiny European apartments where you're lucky to have more than two burners and there's no oven). By starting with the Todd English video, you put it back to difficult. The time for cooking chicken increases non-linearly with how big/thick the pieces are. That's why "fryer" sized chickens are supposed to be small. Try it again with some French fries or sliced potatoes, some breaded tenders or strips, and other smaller things that people report success with. Get some successes of your own under your belt and learn how the machine work. Follow some recipes exactly, not just method, but exact size and quanity of the exact food recommended. And when it says spray with oil, spray with oil. There are some cans of oil spray that have pure oil (and therefore you must check them to make sure they don't go rancid in the cupboard), and there are some pump sprayers you can put your own oil in that work pretty well for awhile, though they tend to wear out too fast. Once you've mastered the stuff everyone else is doing, you'll have enough knowledge and experience with the machine that you should be able to adapt your own recipes and borrow methods from videos. The view is a heck of a lot better from the top of the learning curve!...See MoreWho has an air fryer and where do you put it to use?
Comments (7)I ordered this metal cart as my solution. I’ll keep it stored in the garage. The air fryer can stay in the kitchen. But, when I want to us it I can just wheel this in and place the fryer in the cart. DH thinks I am being overly cautious and you can’t believe everything on Google. I’d rather err on the side of caution....See MoreDo you have an air fryer?
Comments (22)My adult kids have encouraged me to get one, but like so many here, we don’t fry foods. And, it’s just the two of us now, so I’m not cooking big batches of anything. As I’ve mentioned recently, DH and I are also heading towards vegetarianism. And, we don't eat bread, potatoes, wheat flour anything, or white rice. I also don’t want more kitchen clutter! We spent Super Bowl Sunday with friends and she had received one for Christmas. She wasn’t sure she liked it all that much, although we did put in some of the already cooked Buffalo Wings we‘d picked up on the way there. They were already crisp, so I‘m not sure what it did other than warm them. To me, it looked like a giant black and tan plastic egg on her counter. That’s something I would NOT like to look at every day, all day long! I have a double wall oven with convection option and I use convection a lot. I also have a good microwave. So, especially after seeing my friend’s new air fryer/giant egg, I’m definitely leaning away from getting one myself....See MoreHeat Mat for Air Fryer and another question . . .
Comments (3)Thank you @nicole___. I buy parchment paper cookie sheet liners on Amazon and the circles (with holes) for the AF I can get there too - for about $7.00 for 100. I wouldn't mind cleaning the silicone basket liner after each use; I don't think that would be a big deal. @girlnamedgalez8a I think we are talking about two different things. According to my findings today, always set your AF on a heat mat. The heat from the AF can damage countertops. That heat mat is silicone, but it is different from the silicone "liner" that goes inside the basket. From the looks of the liner on Amazon, it is very flat and has holes in it. Same as parchment paper liners, but reuseable. Again I don't think cleaning the liner after every use would be a problem. The cookbook and my manual say to clean the basket after every use and to deep clean periodically. The "after every use" appeared to be wiping out, although I guess that should depend on the residue left. Hope that makes sense - 2 things - liner and mat....See Morecacocobird
