Woman receives light sentence in PA for terrible horse crime

She's only 24 years old--lots of years left to do things I don't even want to think about. According to this article, she relied on her good looks to convince horse owners to give her their horses. I'm guessing the judge might have been swayed by her good looks too. Here's what happened:

A Pennsylvania woman who
sent over 120 off the track Thoroughbreds to slaughter after assuring their
owners they would find good homes has been sentenced. Kelsey Lefever,
aged 24, relied on her good looks and knowledge of the racing industry to convince
horse owners to give their horses to her. She, in returned, passed
herself off as a horse rescuer and promised to find rehabilitate, if needed,
and find good homes for the horses. Instead, Lefever sold most of the
horses straight to a shipper and they were slaughtered in Canada.

”I killed every one of
those . . . horses, over 120 of them . . . Every one of them is dead. I don’t
even know their names and there wasn’t a . . . thing [the sellers] could do
about it because they gave me those horses,” Lefever is quoted as saying.

One horse in particular, a 5 year old named Beau Jaques,
prompted the investigation and trial of Lefever. Beau Jaques was given to
Lefever by his owner, Kevin Patterson, after Beau Jaques suffered a career
ending injury. Lefever promised Patterson that Beau Jaques would be
rehabilitated and adopted into a forever home, and Patterson gave her $200 and
10 bags of feed to help care for Beau Jaques. Instead of rehabilitation,
Animal Angels investigators found Beau Jaques in a kill pen at the New Holland
horse auction.

Lefever avoided prison and
was sentenced to 2 years probation which includes a prohibition from owning or
being around horses. She also received a lifetime ban from getting a
Pennsylvania racing license, which will keep her from working on race tracks in
Pennsylvania.

I'm guessing the judge might have been swayed by her good looks too.

I don't think that is the complete reason. Animals are considered property, and horses and livestock often are excluded from state statutes designed to protect pets, because they are often the property of farmers and there are some powerful lobbies involved.

The Brunzells were a HOT topic horse abuse case HERE in 2014. They purchased expensive old race horses then let them starve to death, covered the bodies with tarps. My DH worked with Rick Brunzell, he owned a construction company. He would only pay for work done if a lawyer threatened him. No one had ANY idea THIS was going on. They went to court and were told they couldn't own any more horses.

I don't want to go into too much detail, but let's just say my father did some pretty stupid sh!t after my mother died, and hooking up with his SO is part of it. He bought her a gemstone ring (NOT a diamond, but still over $15k) for her birthday one year and she said she "really wanted something else", it wasn't her taste, etc. She exchanged it for a diamond and then started telling everyone they were engaged and he sort of went along (mugged into it, as they say). My father is prominent in my hometown, and let's just say people thought he'd lost it. She and I have had major blowups over the years and have settled into a peace of sorts. It has taken time, but my father now sees her and her family for what they really are (money worshipping nouveau riche white trash), but he doesn't want to be alone. I just PRAY they don't ever actually get married to her. I understand where you are coming from. My father had some business opportunities that would have been perfect for him and my DH to undertake together, but he handed it to his SO's sons after pressure from SO. My DH is still POed and will never get over it. My DH has basically cut my father from his life, where they were previously close. I think many women have enormous influence over the husband's/BF's lives. They also like peace at home and many will do a lot to achieve it (getting rid of all the pictures, for example). Combine that with a lonely, older man and you have a recipe for disaster. All I can say is you need to tell your father how you feel. And then stick around and hope he sees the light.

Netla - I adore Mary Roach and her writing. She came to campus one day for a talk, and she was absolutely hilarious. Really recommend that anyone see her if she comes your way - truly interesting and funny way to spend your evening. I have just finished Comfort Woman by Nora Okja Keller (1998), a debut novel by a daughter of a Korean immigrant wife and her white US missionary husband who now live in Hawaii. The books flips back and forth between the daughter's present time PoV and the mother's (now dead) PoV and the cultural/generational clashes that arise. The mother can see spirits and goes into trances - a gift that she believes she was given after having suffered as a "comfort woman" to the Japanese troops when they invaded Korea. Not a straight-forward narrative and quite a bit of magical realism (naturally, since we see some of it from the mother's PoV). Normally not a big fan of this, but this book worked for me once I got the hang of the writing style. Not a happy book, but a good one with a strong ending. I also liked learning about the various beliefs and customs for some of the villages in Korea - fascinating. (Still not a big fan of kim chee.) :-)

So far, I've read: "Bad Behavior" - Isabel Wolff About a young, single gal living in London, who's a veterinary psychologist. It follows her trials and tribulations 15 years after she was duped into putting a small bomb into a man's mailbox (she didn't know it was an explosive). Her guilt is enormous of course. The story picks up where she's getting settled into her new practice, and meets a brilliant war photojournalist. There are twists and turns in the plot, and -- believe it or not -- quite a bit of humour. The author was just short-listed last year for best writer in Women's Literature category (for "A Vintage Affair," which I loved!). " The Earth Hums in B Flat" - Mari Strachan About a 12-year-old girl living in Wales with her hugely dysfunctional family (the mother, mainly -- the girl's father is wonderful). She's going through growing pains (dealing with boys, disloyal female friends, a nasty mother, a self-centered, teasing sister), but is a strong, resourceful girl. ... Can usually think her way out of problems. There's a mysterious murder in the story, as well; although, it isn't a murder mystery book. There are well-drawn Welsh characters. The town is well-described -- you feel as if you can see it. The girl flies in her sleep over it, and hears the earth hum (thus, the title). In spite of this other-worldly feature, it isn't a sci-fi or ghost story kind of book. Only one thing bothered me -- the ending was a little abrupt, it seemed.

She probably didn't really break any laws... she's a big time liar but that's not against the law I guess. It's very sad. Heartbreaking.

Here in Ohio they've finally passed a law making things tougher on animal abusers. About time.

At least that woman can't own any more horses. But it wouldn't surprise me if she found other ways to make money using animals. She sounds like a sociopath.
