RARE ROSE AUCTION
Comments (14)Generally at $5 for the silent part and $10 for the live. But there are a couple of exceptions. One is that where we have paid for the plant to be budded (i.e., if we know that a particularly rare variety won't grow as an own root, which is true of a couple of roses), then sometimes we send budwood to either Steve Singer or Burling Leong to bud for us, and then we start bidding at whatever we paid for that. Another is that if we go half the auction without getting a bid, then we put it down to $3. That's why it's fun to be there for the auction -- you can run around and see what else is happening -- and you can "bottom shop," i.e., try to get the roses that you have researched, but which don't seem to be getting any traction from anyone else. I usually do end up with a couple of $3 roses, but you can never tell in advance which those will be. But never for a striped rose -- those usually are in high demand....See MoreEarth-Kind roses at the Columbus Park of Roses (Ohio)
Comments (22)I had 3 roses left in South Carolina, after being neglected, hit with lawn mowers/weed eaters, and never even watered in at least 2 years. Sea foam, Caldwell Pink, and a tiny Belinda's Dream that I found searching around the yard. I caught it as it was growing back from being cut, and moved it here. When I moved it, I was hoping it was Easy Does it. I already have two BD, but it got saved anyway, and looks so happy. The funny thing is, roses are doing better for me here in a colder zone, and the only difference besides zone, is hubby isn't here all the time. I keep rubbing it in on him when he says how nice they look - "yeah ... that's the result of not being mowed down in cold blood" lol Well I did neglect them more in SC though, I got tired of fighting the fire ants. Not going to tell him that, because I don't want him near them. ;-)...See MoreExperience with Ping Lim's latest roses, True Bloom at Altman?
Comments (11)I bought True Passion aka double 10 at my local Home Depot. Its so far been a good rose. It has good disease resistance and is a prolific bloomer. The blooms are small and not particularly what I would call a "true" rose bloom if you are looking for a hybrid tea form. Its much more an OGR style and so far they are small but many (although that could very well be my heat). I planted it in the middle of July which is usually a No No here, but its done well which says a whole lot. I saw the pink one as well, but the blooms looked rather boring to me. However anything that interests people in growing roses and gives them success with roses is good in my books. We need more than just Knock Outs. Double 10 (as I prefer to call it) has an interesting color and bloom shape, for now, its a keeper in my book, and its on its own roots....See MoreWarriner, Barden, Rupert, Moore - US and West Coast rose breeders
Comments (43)@roseseek Kim, I actually bought my Kashmir at Home Depot, on clearance, three years ago this past summer. It drew me in by being the only one among the several (sad) varieties still there that was not only healthy, but SPOTLESS, and in full bloom and loaded with more buds! I couldn't understand why it hadn't already been snatched up. I decided it must have been due to the atrocious purple pot it was in, lol. Anyway, I regret not buying the other Ping Lim rose in the bunch, which was a yellow whose name escapes me right now. It was nearly in as good condition as K, but at the time only had a couple of faded blooms. I've kicked myself multiple times for not getting it. I haven't seen another of Ping's roses at HD since :( But if K is such a good performer HERE, I can't imagine what it would be like in California. It is unmatched in vigor, health and floriferousness by any other modern rose in my garden. And *you know* how picky I am, lol. John Edit: I should have the original tag somewhere. I'll see if the distributor/grower is listed. Edit#2: just as an aside, I just checked Ping's roses, and "High Voltage" rings a bell. I'm pretty sure that was the yellow I passed up....See Moreteka2rjleffel
