RARE ROSE AUCTION

Hey everyone -- it's that time of year again -- our rose society has its rare rose auction next weekend in Carlsbad, SoCal. Come one, come all -- the weather's great (was 87 degrees today, no humidity, nice ocean waves, yada, yada, perfect place to spend the weekend next week). The event will run the whole weekend, but the auction itself is Sunday November 8th only. If you can't make it down here, then we also take internet bids (due by Friday), and if you win, we will mail out the plants at our cost now or whenever you tell us you want them next Spring. Details and the roses available are on our website at Auction website link.

The rose list is linked to the HMF database for each offered rose, so you can do some research on what is available, and whether it would be good for your area. There is something for everyone on the list (or at least we try).

Our society has made it our business to try to keep somewhat available to rose lovers many deserving older roses that just can't be offered by the ever-fewer commercial rose nurseries, and frankly, we don't even really care how much or whether we make any money on it (although it did start out as a fundraising endeavor for us). Now it is more just a labor of love for the rare roses. There are always more plants available than buyers for them, so prices can get quite low. Especially this year with SoCal's well-publicized drought/water restrictions. Everyone here is planting succulents, and not roses. Yech!

We have many, many roses not available anywhere else, as always. And there will always be one or two that run prices way up, (Simsalabim, anyone?), but the mean price is actually quite low.

One thing is completely new to us this year, and that is that we have "naming rights" to a pair of new roses also available. So if you have someone or something to commemorate, please make a bid on the rights. Naming rights in commercial nurseries get way expensive ($10k), but that's not the case with us. We really have no idea how that will go, so put in a bid and we'll all find out together. Btw, I was told to mention that it is NOT considered a bad thing to name a rose after yourself, so go ahead if you want a rose in your own name.

So please have a look at the website, the rose list, etc., and send me any questions and I will try to answer them.
