I've not had this problem with my saltines. Are your's wrapped in plastic or waxed paper? I have noticed that my older Tupperware that hasn't been used for a while can develop an odor. I'm also thinking I need to research as I believe I've read that the older Tupperware may have BPA'S,etc.

Unless you buy the fat free ones, which I haven't seen lately, saltines go rancid really fast....and stink.

I buy flatbread crackers instead of Saltines, but they all have expiration dates. Even if they are made without fat, the flour (especially whole wheat) can go bad. I use Foodsaver containers for storing flatbread crackers. You are supposed to be able to vacuum seal these containers, but I have not found that to be the case They are still good containers, although I use them only for crackers at cookies.

Thing is, I usually just leave the salines in the cardboard box they come in, but the box got wet, so I transferred the tubes to containers.

And, I did notice that the wrapping is different.... more like plastic than before.

And, yes, the salines had been around for quite awhile.

I just hope I can salvage the Tupperware container.

Like LindaC, I find that saltines go "off" relatively quickly. I usually open a sleeve, then seal the wrapping back up with a binder clip or chip clip, and put it back into the box.

I've also noticed that the wrapping has become much more plastic than waxed paper like....

Yes, crackers (the high fat, flaky kind) go rancid really fast. And stale, but it's the rancid that stinks.

It's hard to know if you can really get the smell out. I've heard that it makes a molecular bond with the plastic, but I don't know if that's true. What I do know for sure is that if you air it out, you might not smell it, but if you close it back up and then open it a few days later, the odor may have a chance to concentrate if it's still there, and stink again. So do seal it up to test it after you do whatever you're trying.

Lars... Foodsaver canisters?!? A few summers ago, during yard sale "season" they seemed to pop up all over the place. I think the brittle plastic gets (microscopic) cracks and just doesn't hold a seal. Have the attachment that will let you seal on Mason jar lids. They can be gently removed and resealed. Wish there were LARGE glass jars with wide mouth. Glass seems perfect for sealing/protecting a lot of "dry" stuff... like small pasta, rice, beans, etc.

I have several large glass jars. Good idea to use them for 'cracker' storage.

I don't have one, but I seem to remember that the Harvest forum was very hot on the Pump 'n' Seal a while back. It allows you to use any jar with a tight-fitting lid.

Klseiverd, you can get half gallon Ball mason jars with a wide mouth.

I had two boxes in the cupboard and noticed the weird smell. I threw them out and bought two more because I thought they went bad from sitting too long. The new ones were exactly the same. I think they changed something because I’ve had saltines all my long life, but this is something different. Maybe they’re using more soda?

Because they're not obviously spam! They could be new friends dipping their toes in. Following to make sure. A service to the rest of us. Harmless, as well, whereas wrongly flagging some would be unkind.

ETA: I look at this way -- if I were a brand-new poster and someone tags me with "following", I would interpret that to mean that person is suspicious of me; this isn't welcoming at all, and frankly, it's off-putting.
