I'm still exploring suet options: last Sunday was a good day at the latest version suet feeder. The Red-bellied Woodpecker is standing on a suet cage or maybe a branch, but eating out of the old pine cone which had suet/peanut butter mix. This is the first time I've seen the Red-belly on the suet feeder - usually it feeds on the hopper or the ground. The Downy Woodpecker is also standing on the upper suet cage, but eating out of that same cage which contains a C&S Almond Treat suet block. The Red-breasted Nuthatch likes the bottom cage, which I think has a C&S Nutty Treat, or something similar. I have another single hanging suet cage on the rose arch with C&S Insect Treat in it. Downies, wrens, titmice and chickadees like this one, maybe because it's well-hidden in the rose canes (which is why I don't have a good photo of it). I'm trying to avoid mixing up my own suet glop, particularly because I don't have a convenient source of rendered suet. The raw suet hasn't been more popular than the store-bought. Claire

Cool Lisa! It took almost a year for me to see a Red Belly on the suet log. Now Mr. Red belly visits the suet log almost every day. He is a noisy guy, and makes a big fuss when he's around. It seems like he's telling all the other birds to stay out of his way and they usually do. There was a Red-belly earlier in the summer that would rap on the gutter when the suet log was empty. It was quite deliberate and somewhat annoying! :) Just signed up for the PFW this morning. I did a bird count yesterday afternoon and this morning. I don't get the packet for a couple weeks, but they said it was okay to enter the data when it comes. It's fun! Had a pair of Red breasted Nuthatches this morning, and yesterday afternoon there were dozens of Juncos! At least 30 in the feeding station area and nearby grass and leaves. Along with 8 or more White throat sparrows, all pecking and scratching and rustling leaves. The ground looked like it was alive.

Hi birders, checking in although nothing too exciting to report here. I'm doing my PFW every week, on a Sun-Mon schedule. This past weekend the birds were sparse. I hardly saw a bird in the yard or feeders for about 2 days during the snow that didn't really stop for about 3 days. Usually they are busy on the feeders during inclement weather, but for some reason they were nowhere to be seen. I do see the Bluebirds frequently, there are more hanging around this winter than the previous 2 years. I wonder if my suet log has influenced their decision not to migrate? If so, lots of pressure on me to keep the home-made suet stocked, wouldn't want those beauties to starve! Claire, that's great you had a male Purple Finch, I see the females from time to time, but the males seem very skittish. They will rarely come to the feeders although I have seen them lurking in the bushes while the female(s) eat. Thyme2dig, no problem about the photo, that day the Waxwings showed up with the Bluebirds was truly a stroke of luck that 1) I was around 2) I looked out the window and 3) the weather/sunlight/etc. was just about perfect for taking pictures! The Waxwings probably followed the Bluebirds there, because they eat from similar food sources in the winter. For sure, they are 2 of the most beautiful North American birds, together in the same spot 6 feet outside my window! :)

I've been hibernating but spring seems to be sneaking in. We might have 6 bluebirds and have seen one standing guard on each of two bluebird boxes so I hope they will nest although we've always had bluebirds so they nest in the wild someplace close by. Yesterday a cardinal appeared and will probably be the only time we see a cardinal this year. Our feeders never measure up. I've heard of people putting out shelled seeds and mealy worms but a local birder said I shouldn't put out mealy worms because birds are supposed to find their own worms. Two red-winged blackbirds have also arrived and are spending time at the feeders and pecking at the suet. We won't see them in the yard later on when they move to the marshy area and sing from the cattails. I've seen one rusty capped sparrow but we might have more. Mourning doves and, of course, jays are around. Also a hawk but we haven't seen it close enough to identify. The other bird behavior we saw for the first time but the local birder said was quite common was at least 4 birds going into a bluebird box during a snowstorm. We also think the sparrows will take shelter under our small front porch. About two days ago the deer started coming out of the woods. There's not much snow in the fields anymore. Last night I only saw one but the afternoon before, my husband counted 8. Our neighbor farmer curses their fondness for his clover in the hayfield. I, too, appreciate the photos and Claire's maintenance. It's so nice to see what's happening around New England. I'm just north of Concord and west of NHBabs.
