Blowing my nose all day...silly question...
Comments (2)Of course I would encourage you to stop smoking. But have you ever tried a saline nasal rinse? I make my own, since I hate tasting the preservatives in the otc ones. Mix 1 cup boiled, cooled water with 1/4 tsp baking soda and 1/4 tsp salt (without additives). I actually use the spray bottle from the otc stuff, since its easy to use. Try spraying your nostrils 4-5 times a day, and see if it feels better. Change the solution every week or so, but clean out the bottle with a little bleach water. Good luck....See MoreDealing with Bi Polar or Is it something else? Update on my DIL
Comments (28)Ashley, Thank you. I need all the prayers I can get right now. My DIL is too much.. like having a room full of crazy BM's! I am wondering if she has multiple personalities. On Saturday, she accused me of wanting to take DGS so I can have a baby of my own... and when I point blank asked her if she wants him back full time, she said no. She says she can't have a baby full time "at this point" in her life. I mean she flipped from me stealing the baby to saying she can't possibly handle him full time. I was at work and while I was with a customer, she walked out taking DGS with her. By the agreement, she is supposed to have Saturday & Sunday. Well, Sunday she didn't call or bring him back. On Monday, I talked to my son and he told me what she said to him... everything was twisted. He is upset & does not need to be bothered with worrying about this. He has a job to do over there, he should not have to have her telling him to tell me anything. She can tell me herself, but she tells him & he is frustrated because he is over there and can't do anything. So, Tuesday she calls my daughter to ask for diapers. My daughter takes her diapers & DGS had been taken back to the doctor. I called the doctor's office & was told DGS has an ear infection, but is otherwise okay. So, Tuesday evening, I ask her if she is going to stick to the agreement... she says no, he is staying with her. So, I tell her that I still want a drug test & I had talked to my attorney about guardianship. She told me to bring it on and she would pass a drug test. I told her if she takes a drug test and passes, I will drop everything and she can keep DGS full time. (lol, even though she ranted for ten minutes on Saturday on how that was impossible!) She didn't answer me. Then today (Wed) she sent me a text at 5pm, telling me my son wanted us to talk. (my son told me on Monday that he told her to have a talk with me) but I did not write back. Less than an hour later, she called me at work & said she had DGS outside & I need to get him. I wasn't shocked but I was in the middle of working... it's a very busy weekend coming up & normally I leave work at 5, it was 6 & I had planned to stay til about 8. I hesitated and she says "well you do want him don't you.. this is what you want, right?" And, I could not say no to taking him. She said she was going to go ahead & stick to our prior agreement. I went outside & there he was... dried boogers on his face, gunk dried on his eye, his little eyes were red and he looked pathetic. She handed him to me without a word & huffed back to her car. She was visibly angry, like I just forced her to give up her child. I took him inside & then noticed he had a fever. I called her and asked when he had last taken medicine. In a very friendly tone, tells me oops I forgot to give you his medicine, I'll be right there. She came inside & this time (mind you, this was about fifteen minutes after she huffed off) she was being sweet & bubbly.. like we were besties. She said she took a video of him taking a few steps and she couldn't wait to show me but she forgot it at home. It was WEIRD. Like a totally different person. So, I cleaned up and brought DGS home, gave him fever reducer & a bottle. He took a nap and woke up in the evening... we played, he ate, and he went back to sleep. I may finally sleep easier knowing he is here. But, I know she only did this because she wanted to go somewhere tonight. I have to take it one day at a time, because the next time I see or hear from her, I don't know what I'll get....See MoreLack of Social Graces
Comments (22)Hi Hoovergal...I'm new to these forums, I didn't know there was such life advice and I was just at Houzz looking at the beautiful pictures. So I'm backtracking and reading. I work with the elderly in assisted living (memory support) and sometimes these people can get into a loop of habits and mannerisms. It's quite random...good news? It may go away as randomly as it came. As some have pointed out, it may have been nervous energy from being sick/in pain from the UTI. So I would guess that frequent assessment of her physical health will be important so you can find things she wouldn't be able to tell you. General safety is a must for dementia sufferers.. keep nails done, carry tissues, carry hand sanitizer, keep her occupied and distracted, redirected as best you can. Aside from that...I think you just have to accept that this kind of thing happens. Take her places where it's no big deal. More casual places. Visit friends (yours and hers) in their homes where the environment and privacy are more controlled. For busy public places...less than peak of the day times, like mid afternoon lunch instead of noontime. No matter where you go there might be someone who is not understanding of your situation but usually they are outnumbered by people who can see that your mom can't help it and be kind. The good news too...is that as your mother declines it will become more obvious that these lapses in her manners are out of your control and hers and the public will be quite forgiving. Also the soothing balm of humor! A grown woman digging for gold. Smile. It's kind of funny...dementia patients don't respond well to frazzled caretakers...so try not to sweat the small stuff. AND HEY. Adopt the attitude of gratitude. I say this with all sincerity and respect, appreciating that this is not ideal to nose-pick in public. However...at least she is not digging her butt. I hope that is a comfort to you. Hang in there. Patience. Peace. Understanding. Gratitude. Keep it simple. Breathe!...See MoreCan Flu test be wrong?
Comments (9)If he really does have the flu, sounds like it's not making him very sick. Like others said, perhaps b/c he had the flu shot, he just has a mild case. I had almost an opposite experience recently where my dd seemed as if she had the flu but didn't. She had a high fever, cold/cough, sore throat. Initially the fever wasn't that bad, so I didn't take her to the doctor. But she was really complaining of her sore throat and even threw up twice (which can indicate strep). So on day 3, I took her to the ped for a strep test. The ped thought for sure, given her symptoms, that it was either strep or flu, though she didn't have body aches at all. She also hadn't had the flu shot. Well, she tested negative for both tests! So just some random other virus she unfortunately picked up. Poor kid was quarantined to her room though for four days...my high schooler was in the midst of finals, and my 8th grader was in the middle of mid-terms and I couldn't afford for either of them to get sick. Thankfully that seemed to work as none of my other three kids, nor dh or I, caught it. On a different note, we just got an email from school that one of my son's classmates has whooping cough. Apparently he's been out of school for nearly two weeks, but the Health Dept is going to be contacting anyone they feel was at risk. Thankfully, this is 6th grade and most of the kids should have had their final booster shot last year (my son had it this past summer). Of course, I'm reading the symptoms and it says "runny nose, cough and sneezing" are early signs, then 1-2 weeks later the bad cough develops. And guess who has a runny nose, cough and sneezing? My 6th grader! I'm sure it's just coincidence....vaccinated people only have 10% chance of getting it apparently. Glad your son is feeling well enough for basketball!...See More- 9 years agolast modified: 9 years agogardengal48 (PNW Z8/9) thanked morz8 - Washington Coast
