Duvet cover fitting a down duvet

Hi everyone, i am sorry if this isn't really the right place to post this but i need this question answered!! We bought a Kind Size down duvet about 4 years ago and it never fitted any of KS linen, which we bought from the same shop. It left about 4-6 inches of duvet cover hanging off the side and drove me NUTS...for FOUR years! I also tried lots of different covers from different stores as styles changed but I just assumed we had bought a "dud" duvet as none fit, so eventually I convinced hubby to let me replace it... i bought a new down duvet from a different shop...and it doesnt fit any of our linen either!!! (Although in saying that i am sure that the first time we used it, it did?) Please can someone tell me WHYYYY??

Could you further explain "it doesn't fit your linen"?

One company (I forget who) makes extra-sized duvet covers. Like 4". And there is a California King, different a regular king. from I'd try a cover from another source. And you can take measurements to make it all easier. A king comforter is 120x120, a California King is 120x114.

You might try overstock.com and search for oversize in their comforter section, then always check to see the measurements so you'll know if the overhang will cover the mattress. Your experience with feathers being prickly is something I've never had with our *down* comforters, so I suspect your comforter brand may be the culprit. I was given a couple of feather throw pillows that look pretty, but they are actually miserable to use because of sharp feathers poking you. Real down pillows and comforters don't do that.

The duvet (the comforter part) should be the same size as the cover. I've found that comforters are usually not the same size as proper duvets and don't fit the covers properly. Seems there is little standardization in these products. We bought our first duvets and duvet covers in Europe and no problem with shifting, just gave them a shake in the morning and they were in place. The covers fit perfectly which I'm sure was the reason why they didn't shift. I think clips or buttons would be uncomfortable if you actually used the duvet. If you only use it for decoration turned back no problem. Ties might be more comfortable.

Hm, I guess this is my problem. I have not found any patterns that I liked, I am not a big fan of the flat out tropical flowers/palm trees/shells kind of thing. I'm more of the mindset of the more "serene" hotel kind of style. Seems like when I find one I like there is always something wrong (not washable, too small for my duvet, etc). The link here is a good example of what my style is like(and I almost bought it too), but it's dryclean only. My boyfriend's mom has this one in a different color/pattern in a vacation house and she said it's a nightmare to clean. My current duvet cover is a white/grey/dark grey from overstock. I thought the 100% cotton would be easy because that's what my old one was, but it was decimated by cat hair in one night. Here is a link that might be useful: Duvet Cover

I wash my down pillows in our fromt loader on a woolen cycle. I put just a half amount of soap in the dispenser and add some fabric softerner to the soap. I figure that it is important not to strip the oils out of down. Just a tiny bit of softener to rhe rinse. Then I use the extra hig speed for all spins. That dries the doun some and then just toss them into the dryer on low. Pillows come out wery puffed up and springy. A few pieces of down leak through the fabric but I just wipe it off. Often takes a very long drying time. After the auto dry stops I set the machine to timed dry and go for another half hour or 45 minutes to be sure. If your fromt loader is large enough the duvet fillet should fit there too, but I have never tried that.

Also, if the linen you are putting into the cover is not a full comforter, it could appear more loose, since covers are trypically intended for fluffy down comforters. Where is the extra 4 inches? At the feet, on the sides? Sometimes, after use, the comforter tends to curl or bunch inside the cover, making the cover seem to big. I love the look of a duvet cover much like I love the look of a slipcovered couch (so cozy and inviting!) but it never worked for me. I was constantly struggling to readjust the comforter back to position inside.

We always do the duvet one size larger than the cover. If this isn't possible, I'll sew up one side of the cover those extra 4". You're not the first one to have this problem.
