Recycling & other eco-friendly habits
Comments (23)I just found this list of reasons to recycle and thought you all might enjoy reading it, too. Lynn *If not recycled, one quart of used motor oil could pollute 250,000 gallons of drinking water. Recycling one ton of old paper saves, 7,000 gallons of water or, put another way, every ton of recycled paper requires 7,000 fewer gallons of water to manufacture than virgin paper. Every ton of recycled paper requires 4100 KWH less energy than virgin paper to produce. Recycling saves energy and reduces air pollution as well as greenhouse gas emissions. Half of all polyester carpet made in the United States is made from recycled plastic (PET) Recycling the steel from six cars can provide enough steel framing for an entire new house. Recycling one glass bottle saves enough electricity to light a 60-watt bulb for four hours. Aluminum cans produced in the United States can contain at least 50 percent recycled content. Americans represent only five percent of the world's population, but generate 30 percent of the world's garbage. Forty percent of all U.S. municipal solid waste consists of paper and paperboard products. Each ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees. Each ton of recycled paper saves over 3 cubic yards of landfill space. The estimated 272 billion aluminum cans reclaimed during the 1980s saved 2 billion feet of landfill space. Recycling reduces taxes and landfill fees. Making paper from recycled materials results in 74% less air pollution and 35% less water pollution than virgin paper. Manufacturing with aluminum scrap saves an estimated 95% in energy costs. Manufacturing with copper scrap saves an estimated 85% in energy costs. Ninety-nine percent of all beer cans and 97 percent of all soda cans are made of aluminum. American consumers and industry throw away enough aluminum to rebuild the entire United States commercial air fleet every three months. Recycling generates jobs and revenue....See MoreCross post: rearranging the kitchen, how much will fit?
Comments (24)Marti, I really am pleased with your mockup, I was thinking something similar to that, then scrolled down and VOILA there it already was. You can blast it out of the park for us folks, then fret over your own. Trust your instincts....they are sound....and workable. If the front door is right there, and you have 22 inches of wall space available, I think you could find a 15 or 18 inch wide tall cab that is like 12 to 18 inches deep. Not a full depth cab,...And if you keep a long door on it, that could provide a place for a couple of hooks, to hang raincoats, back packs, whatever if you have kids, or have your guests hang their coats there as they come in. Just something wide enough for someone to rest their derriere if need be to take off muddy shoes? I also think you need to claim the counter space from your DH who is usurping it at this time. I realize how convenient it is for him, menfolks can become such creatures of habit. But my thinking is, you need all the counter space you've got for kitchen prep work. And, having the counter space on the side of the fridge that has the door handle. THAT is the perfect option. In my case, we have a French door fridge, and not being able to set something down on a countertop is making me consider having a stubby peninsula between the fridge and the sink, so it sticks out enough past the open doors to give me a spot to put down groceries or whatever. With a single door fridge, you know which side to make available for staging the groceries going in or out of the fridge. And Jessica, you are so right, this is a splendid group of friendly people....See MoreKitchen Kitties! Cat Lovers Unite.
Comments (113)Been years since I redid the kitchen (and sold that house) but still come here most every day to see what is new - I "personally" have one cat, Heidi, she just turned 13. Until this Spring I also had Harley who was 13 in the Spring. Sadly, the time came to tell him goodbye due to his almost unmanageable overactive thyroid. He was my orange and white tabby. Heidi is the brown/gray one, she evidently has a double coat because most weeks I vacuum up enough hair to 'clothe' another cat. She loves to drink out of the toilet and she is my acrobat. Perhaps she thinks that if her feet touch the floor something terrible will happen. She is a totally inside cat, as was Harley. I keep my lounge chair and couch covered with inexpensive quilts because Heidi shreds upholstery. Six years ago my daughter and grand-daughter in law brought home a tiny kitten, maybe six weeks old, I named her Miss Kitty, she is outside part of the day and inside the rest of the time (we live on five acres and my home is closer to the back property line than to the road). Miss Kitty was not properly handles while a kitten (I was still living at my previous home during the work week and only out here on weekends. My sister in law lived next door and 'cared' for Miss Kitty but she has always been stand-offish. Miss Kitty insists on drinking from the water faucet. Miss Kitty is the only one that loves the kitchen counters. Then there are the boys - the actually are the grandson's cats but I feed them, vet them, bring them in when the weather is bad. Kitty Boy is (I think) either 3 or 4 years old. Brad brought him home to be a barn cat (keep in mind this little cat was maybe 8 wks old and just leaving him in the barn alone was iffy, at best). Because Mo (Mogley), the huge tuxedo male had no intention of befriending Kitty Boy. The are somewhat friends now. Mo is (I think) 6 years old. Miss KittyKitty Boy Mo I will need to dredge up a photo of Harley and Heidi later. Carolyn...See MoreTrouble with newly adopted kitty
Comments (40)My nerves would be shot if I left my cats outside. If one didn't come home, I'd be worried to death and have to search the town till I found it. Of my 15 cats, only the first one was allowed out and that changed too. He was a Siamese and we lived in the country then for a brief time. Then we moved to the suburbs but lived on a dead end street. One day Simon went missing and was gone for two days. He finally returned and we figured he got locked in someone's garage. Then he got into a catfight and we didn't realize it until he got very sluggish. We parted his fur and saw a wound that had become infected. Off to the vet, antibiotics, and he was homebound the rest of his life which was 20 years. Loved that cat and so did my kids. My daughter has his twin (female though) and a larger lighter male, her brother. Of course, they are strictly inside too....See Morer0se
