Galley sink vs Kohler Stages sink
Comments (80)We have the standard accessories that are provided with our 5' Galley sink (2 deck/cutting boards, two colanders, two mixing bowls, two platforms with round holes that can be used for colander or mixing bowl, one drying rack). All of them can be set level with the counter or turned 90 degrees and fits the lower rim that makes them about 3/4" below the counter level (all Galley accessories have this 90 degree feature which is unique and makes it more useful than some of the other brands.) Because you can put the drying rack or the cutting board/decks on the upper level, you can easily slide the wash basin or other bowl accessories underneath them on the lower ledge. In addition we purchased the wash and serve set and the full bottom grate for both our Galley sinks. We use the wash basin every day and it substitutes as an ice bucket when we entertain and turn our sink into a wet bar. Personally after using this setup, we do not feel we would ever need the drydock with our sinks because the full bottom grate provides another level of drying with the upper drying rack. The full bottom grate is a must for us and extremely useful for drying larger pots and pans, vegetables and provides a much larger drying surface than the drydock would. We would also highly recommend the wash and serve set. We did not purchase any other accessories and so far have found this set up to be perfect. We looked at other fixtures since the Galley Tap fixtures were more expensive than Kohler and some other brands, but are very happy that we chose the Galley Taps because the spigots are specially designed to center on the sink and the soap dispenser is long enough to put soap far enough away from the side of the sink to reach the wash basin easily. The hot/cold tap also extends nicely away from the side of the sink so that we are able to fill pitchers and teapots as well as single serving mugs and glasses easily. The Galley Taps were well worth the investment and look beautiful -- easy to keep clean and shiny. (We have two faucets in our 5' sink and one in our 4' sink in our vacation home.)...See MorePlease show me the space under your 30 inch shaw sink
Comments (12)The cabinet is a standard height. That is, the sink is undermounted beneath the counter, and the final counter height is standard. The cabinet is about 32" wide. I can't say exactly, because the entire wall of cabinetry was custom made in the vintage style where it is all one long unit. The cabinets are not separate, and the side of the sink cabinet is also the side of the cabinet next to it. The installation was all very stressful for me because the "hole" where the sink would fit had to be pretty darn close to the correct height in order to make the counter the right height. Now, since my cabinets are painted, I did have some wiggle room. We needed to shim the sink to make it exactly the right height and levelness. The gaps all around the sink were covered with bondo (by me), and then painted. So the sink is perfectly snuggled in now. But if I had wood cabinets, my cabinetmaker would NOT have had the skill to do a beautiful job. Pictures, you say? You might be sorry you asked! Get ready for a bunch! I hope they help. The long cabinet unit: The sink "cabinet" Playing around with how to position the sink (shims in place) Again, experimenting with position and where the counter will end up: Bondo to cover the cracks More bondo (bottom edge) Sink with adjacent units (dishwasher is hidden on the right side-cabinetmaker hated making that panel for me with the fake drawer, but I think it's pretty awesome!! ) In the process of painting: Teeny, weeny kitchen, still in progress :-) francy...See MoreSink issue; Kohler stages 45 sink question(s)
Comments (11)I was hoping scrappy would join the conversation. I just snapped a pic of mine and you can see it does not splash with the faucet on regular flow. I believe you need to choose the faucets carefully to fit your use, especially if wall mounted. One thing I'd like to mention though is that I would not want to give up the shelf to hand washing. That is my favorite prep area. As I've used my sink for six months now, I've developed patterns; I use the right 3/4's for prep and the area to the left of the drain for dirty/transitional stuff and hand washing. Hand washing is a main reason I went with the Kohler. My DH is not trainable regarding this and it's one of the reasons we chose the stages. I did consider this in the planning stage and have my fridge to the right of the landing counter, the trash and recycle directly below the center of the sink and DW to the left. We considered two faucets but ultimately went with one Kohler Karbon. It reaches all corners and i love that I do not have to hold it. I love it as much as my sink. The shelf is very handy during prep. That's where I open packages, put my prep scraps, actually it changes jobs continually and I have to say it is the most active part of my sink and I would not want hand washing there. I also place my small dish drainer there for cleanup. This is my typical setup except I usually use small colanders on the grate, then slide them under my cutting boards to keep the left clear for hand washing. In your case, I would consider a wall mount Karbon on the shelf side and the Hi-rise on the left....See MoreIt starts with the sink... Kohler Stages 33 or 45?
Comments (39)Yes, when I say it started with the sink, I did mean it quite literally. The first thing that bothered me about our kitchen when we moved in was the sink. But if you replace the sink, you really need to replace the counters and the faucet, and it would be a good time to replace the dishwasher. If you are going to replace the counters, then you might as well think about making any other changes... which lead to moving the range and adding a cabinet, and so it goes. I think the other thing about a sink is that it's something that you use all the time. Constantly. It seems like everything in a kitchen revolves around the sink. And that's probably why if you have room, two sinks are a good idea. But I will be happy just to get this one large sink installed. And I hope by starting with it, everything else will fall into place....See Moresmm5525
