Our layout? New remodeler+young architect+funky house
Comments (32)Lazygardens--- Thanks for the encouragement. I'm afraid "not ideal" could be the name of this house, love it though I do. celticmoon--- I sure like the idea of the range being more "protected." The new window box over the sink would have to move down, though, and would then give a view of the wall of the little foyer extension. So, hmmm... pllog---I couldn't agree more. I sure would be nice to not enter through the kitchen. It's just not in the cards right now, and I think I'd rather start all the way over than to continue trying to whip this house into submission. We're looking for improvement, not perfection. BTW, I think it was you a few months ago who suggested the Kohler Karbon as a wall-mount + sprayer faucet. I'd dismissed it because of the look which I'm concerned will become dated, but function is winning out here. So, thanks for giving me pause to reconsider!...See MoreOur new house is finished! Comments (112)Nini - on your first post, you said you'd do a separate post about honed and polished marble. Pros and cons to both. Have you done that and if not, would you do one or send me an email. We have chosen statuetto white marble for our island and I plan to go with honed (after testing polished). I'd like to hear your experiences. Thanks!...See MoreCalling all experts! Comments (8)You could many different things with an opening that size such as putting in operating windows or doors, put a wall in below with shorter windows, ect. Depends on what you want and how it would tie in with exterior. You could call a commercial glazer and see if they can do just the glass if that is all you want. I would want a triple paned, appropriate low-E glass pack with a warm edge spacer . Keep in mind your glass will look different than your other windows if they don’t have Low-e. Being as your climate can get pretty cold , and. You’re already at 32 degrees I don’t think I would go with an aluminum framed window and you’re building code might not even allow it. Aluminum is much more prone to condensation than other typical frame materials....See MoreNew home build - any obvious mistakes, and ceiling height?
Comments (33)Flo - Thank you for your kind and thoughtful comments. I'll be working with a draftsman, yes. I do expect that he'll give me lots of suggestions, and I wanted to make sure that I had all the input I might consider. I'm not afraid of starting again - I've redesigned this house many times. A draftsman will not give you lots of suggestions other than to make sure the spaces are to code. They will give you what you tell them. If I had listened to my draftsman, I would have wound up with a frankenstein house and I'm dealing with a flat lot. You're not. A draftsman is NOT an architect. Don't conflate the two even if your draftsman calls him/herself a designer. They are not. Unless you personally have an actual design background, I would suggest strongly you look into working with a licensed ARCHITECT who will help you create your vision. Someone who thinks in 3D which means creating the floor plan, the elevations and how the house will sit on the lot all at the same time. Good design is not putting tetris room boxes together, then slapping on a facade for the elevation and then plopping it on the site. Architectrunnerguy posted here asking for the elevations. He is a talented architect who happens to also work remotely with clients. He would be my first choice if I were designing a house now. I've had an island cooktop before and love it... I spend a lot more time cooking than washing things in a sink. Never understood why people want to stare at a wall while they cook, rather than staring out into a lovely room! I think if you did a true evaluation of your cooking style, you'd find you spend the most time prepping your foods and only about 10% actually cooking the food. Your prep space should have the best view in reality and the best prep spaces are those next to a water source. Why do you want your laundry IN your closet? Why not a separate laundry area adjacent to the master? This way you're not having to walk into the master bedroom then closet anytime you want to wash things like dish towels, or towels or bedding from the other rooms....See MoreStan B
