I don't have experience with that rose but I am also in zone 5! Where are you located? I am in Iowa and we get a medium amount of snow but have plenty of winter with zero snow coverage. I have only been growing roses for five years but ill share a few I love and that I feel do well for me.

For older roses I've grown Henri Martin and Salet which have been hardy to the tips. HM is a once bloomer and Salet has a bit of repeat but not much.

If you want a good once blooming climber I am in love with Alchymist. It is hardy to zone 3 and was a very quick grower for me.

and of course David Austin roses, I have Jude the obscure, Carding Mill, queen of Sweden, golden celebration, heritage, pretty Jessica, Benjamin Britten, Constance spry, the generous gardener, just to name a few. Not sure if you've discovered David austins or if you are interested in them but there are tons that do well in zone 5.

I planted Poseidon in the spring of 2015, and it got a slow start, but did better later in the season. It really took off in 2016, and did great in the spring and fall, but was a little sluggish during the hottest part of summer, but it gets pretty hot here. Overall I think it is a great rose, no hint of disease so far, and has grown quite a bit. I'm anticipating that it will get even better once it becomes more established. I ordered mine because of the positive comments on this forum, and I'm glad I did. It's a Kordes, and I believe it and several other Kordes roses are disease resistant and hardy. Beverly is another Kordes rose I'm very pleased with.

Hi Michaela! I have heard of the Austin's, I'm in love and have a list the length of my arm that I need to find! We just moved to this house so I'm starting from scratch in my garden, so many Rose possibilities, such a huge yard! Thank you so much for your recommendations, I have a few of those on my list, I'm happy to see they're doing well in a zone 5!

I'm in Ontario, Canada. Technically I'm a zone 6 here, borderline zone 5 (it gets to around -28 Celsius most winters) but I believe that converts me to a USDA zone 5/4 :) it gets cold, but we get a lot of snow cover. 3+ feet.

(Or read in this case), I hadn't heard anywhere how the growth was, and I was worried that with all the wonderful things I'd heard about it, it would be a slow grower like my John Cabot. (Nothing against good ol' John, but I've been two years without roses, hes a horrible tease!)

I am near Canada on the other side of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, I am in zone 6a , we can get down to -10F (-23C) here. I think you're in US zone 5. :-) Do you know you're very lucky to have 2 great nurseries in Ontario Canada? Hortico and Palatine! Gillian, rather than give you a list of winter hardy, disease resistant roses, I will recommend just one for your consideration. It is hands down the most disease resistant, winter hardy rose I have ever grow. Its name is QUIETNESS.

You will find quite a few entries on this rose in this forum, Roses Forum, if you do a Rose Forum search. Just type in Quietness in the space provided at the top of this forum's first page. You will be given a wealth of references to all the pertinent forum posts on this exceptional rose. Study them carefully and you will find it hard to pass up on trying Quietness.

I would just like to add one additional cultural practice under which I manage Quietness in my garden. One you may want to try on this rose yourself. Quietness is listed as a shrub rose. IMHO it is a grandiflora, not a shrub rose, and grows best and blooms best when pruned as a grandiflora.

Left to grow as a shrub rose, it gets twiggy, lanky and sprawling, producing smaller and fewer flowers, as compared to its management as a grandiflora. Pruned as a grandiflora, it essentially is pruned like a hybrid tea, and grows magnificently.

Moses, would you mind taking the time to detail how you prune Quietness? I have one here and it does really well, but I'd like to make sure I'm pruning it correctly! I have another one coming this spring as well - Gillian check it out on HMF!

I believe you will love Poseidon its healthy and blooms are very nice and repeats very
well. The only issue I had was the JBs loved the blooms. Please have a look at Palatine roses they have
a very good selection of Kordes roses , it’s worth the drive to Niagara region.
I have to say all of my David Austin roses survive the winter usually…will see
this year. Most prolific is Mary rose never without a bloom , last year JJpeace
turned me onto Evelyn the scent is amazing and it does very well apparently in Ontario..I
got two last year. If you are anywhere near greater Toronto Area please visit Vandermeer
nurseries in the summer they have an amazing collection of all kinds of roses.

Summersrhyrhm, I certainly am lucky! I have order sheets for both! Although Hortico has a larger selection, I haven't heard very good things about them. I intend to find out for myself though, as I'm only 3hrs or so away from them. :)

Moses, I love Quietness! I have both Quietness & Hawkeye Belle on my list for orders from Heirlooms. I can't seem to find them anywhere else, or at least not anywhere that will ship to Canada. You would think Palatine or Hortico would carry them, but nope! And I've never seen them at any local nursery's. Lots of Knockouts. No Buck roses :( - thank you so much for the pruning tip! Ive written everything down in my rose journal so when I get that beauty, and she's established, I'll give it a shot!

Julie, such a beautiful picture! It's exactly the kind of rose I love, I love all roses, but soft pink/shell pink roses are just beautiful. And with the disease resistance and winter hardy to top it off, *sigh* just perfect!

Rose_crazy, I'm so excited to get these orders in and have Poseidon! I lucked out last year, not a single JB in the whole garden, so let's hope that luck holds lol. I had my doubts about Mary Rose, she's been on the list, and off several times but you have definitely gotten her back on!

So far on my list of Austin's to order I have Lady of Shallot, Sharifa Asma, Sophy's Rose and Scepter D'Isle. I'd really like to try Munstead Wood, but I'm not certain it would make it through the winter.

Gillian check out Olivia Rose Austin too if you like Quietness. I got it last year and it bloomed well & no disease issues. Will see how it does over the winter. Munstead Wood was new for me last year too and I love it! Based on other posts here it should survive Z5 winters too.

I got my Poseidon in 2015. It has been a vigorous, tall, healthy bush. JB's and Thrips like it , too. Lots of long stemmed roses with sometimes "messy" blooms. I am in zone 6. " A picture is worth a thousand words", so here are some pictures from 2016.

WOW! Ky. Rose...that is one big Poseidon.I am in Louisville,KY and mine is 3 years old from Palatine and not near that big. Minimal bloom, almost took it out, but I love the color so I kept it. I must be doing something very wrong. Yours is lovely.

Huckdog, thanks for the compliments. Mine came from Palatine, too. It is around 6 feet tall and I deadhead/cut generous long stems.

KYRose, oh my goodness those are gorgeous roses! If mine looks half as good as yours I'll be a happy camper :) as I said, no JBs last year, despite the roses I got from a local nursery and hastily threw into the garden (lol) so I'll pray I have the same luck next year and they avoid my garden! Otherwise I'll be out their picking them off! Lol

Hello! Welcome to the world of rose addicts! Poseidon was new to me this year and although I Love the colors, as you can see the flowers crisp before loosing their petals. This is too new to comment on how cold hardy it is here...

Quietness has been amazing; very fast growing.

Another beautiful, healthy rose is Nahema. Smells amazingly fragrant.couldn't find a decent picture of it in bloom but it has interesting, almost curled leaves.

I have had very good experiences with hortico, they really seem to go out of their way for you.

I agree with huckdog, your Poseidon looks great, Kentucky!

Kelly, Is your Nahema in the garden? I hope it's Ok in zone 4. My friend's didn't make it last winter in zone 7......

Gillian Mr. Lincoln should be fine for you. I bought a $3 body bag, the dog snapped off all but one cane the end of the season, and it came back just fine last spring. Lady of Shallot & Sceptre should be ok too.

Another very underestimated austin is Darcy Bussell. Out blooms most of my other Austins and is one of the most cold hardy. I don't spray and she does tend to get some BS but it doesn't stop her. I'll see if I can find a pic...

Kelly, thank you! I am definitely an addict. The list keeps growing and it's showing no signs of stopping lol! I'm not too worried about crispy petals, after the problems I had with Fragrant Memory this past year...All but one bloom was deformed and my goodness did it ball something awful! Not to mention it's for a zone 7 (I bought it at a local nursery, had never heard of it before and assumed it was OK for our area, since my nursery was selling it....I never buy anything without researching first now! Lessons learned.) But that one bloom. *Sigh* reminded me of Quietness but with a heavy white wine scent. Your roses are just gorgeous! I hope my garden looks as lovely as yours when I'm finished :)

Julie, oh yay! A resilliant Mr Lincoln! I've been on the search for a red, and he seems to fit the bill! My cat is a monster in the garden, he loves to rub on the roses, and smell them. I think he figures they're giving him a nice scratch....But it means I have to remove him every 5 minutes when I'm gardening. The more I read about Scepter D'Isle, the more I like it! All these wonderful roses to look forward to! I could do a happy dance in my kitchen!

Aww thats more than worth some damaged blooms. Hey has any one overwintered Poseidon in zone 5 yet. Northland has the rose listed at 6b so does the patent information. Palatine has 5b for zone hardiness. I was waiting for more gardener reports on this one.
