I have a warmer and use various fragrance oils from time to time. I try to keep an open mind, because many modern medicines are derived from old fashioned herbal/oil remedies, I do think some health claims can be overstated (but some may work).

I have two co-workers that use and rave about essential oils. They both claim that they and their families sleep better with the lavender and something else (I don't remember the other thing). I want to get my own diffuser so I can try it for sleeping. If I like that, I'll get other oils. I believe that for certain things, it can help. They claim that the Mayo Clinic is starting to use this in their treatment for certain conditions. Not sure if that is true but it seems to be that it can't hurt to try it at the very least. I don't think it really cures anything but I do believe it can calm a person so that the symptoms are less noticeable.

I tried both lavender and rose geranium to repel ticks last year. Neither worked, but I smelled good. I have an open mind about other uses. My granddaughter asked for a couple of essential oils this Christmas, and I bought her a set of 16 different ones. I'll get her a diffuser for her birthday this month.

Remember when you buy essential oils they are completely different from fragrance oils. Make sure the label states 100% pure essential oil.

That's a good link Walnut posted. It was that link that led me to purchase my diffuser. I have really enjoyed it. We were both sick with a cold bug and I used the eucalyptus in it and it really helped our breathing. I need to use the lavender at night. I have been having a hard time sleeping lately because I have really been hurting. I used the lavender one afternoon and got very relaxed in my recliner lol.

I only use pure essential oils. I like patchouli best so far. My diffuser unit will run for 8 hours or so then when it gets low on water it turns off. I would recommend it. I have severe scent allergies and can't use other types of scent things but these essential oils are not causing problems for me.

Elmer essential oil is not a perfume or artificial synthetic scent. Its extracted from the plant itself. Fragrance oil is synthetic. Many people that have allergies to scent find its often from synthetic scents like what's in laundry detergent ect...but essential oils if your not allergic to the plant lets say lavender than you won't be allergic to lavender essential oil.

elmer, I'm with you! I remember when my mother made the beds in the morning, a window in each room would be opened at the top several inches to "air out" the room. We also slept with a window open on cold nights - perhaps only a few inches, but open none the less.

I follow this window open at night to the day. No point in opening a window from the top or bottom during our hot, humid summer days - nothing but OH River Valley "muggy" air and pollution coming in!

I don't like perfumes either, I use unscented everything but I do really like my diffuser. I have orange, tea tree, eucalyptus, lemon, lavender, peppermint and mix them for various scents. I also use a drop in the tub with epsom salts. I won't use the mixes you can buy at home stores, just pure essential oils.

How do you make sure it is not snake oil? There are a lot of fake products going around, someone could sell cheap manufactured scent as expensive essential oil?

I'm loving my diffuser that I got for Christmas. So far I like patchouli the best. I'm using orange today that's from NOW but it doesn't smell very strong. My husband bought EO from Puritan's Pride, on line vitamin seller. I would definitely trust their oils. My patchouli is from an ebay seller that I bought years ago...it only gets better with age. The NOW brand orange was purchased at an Amish store.

I spoke with a friend of mine that uses essential oils she makes soaps, lotions ect.. last year about this after I found a recipe for tinnitus online She consulted her book lol and agreed.

Mix 15 drops into a carrier oil such as almond oil, coconut oil...gently shake and l et sit a few days. Rub a drop behind each ear at bedtime. Also gently inhale one time from bottle or use a infuser.

Its very important you use a high quality essential oil, not fragrance or perfume oil. Its also important you mix it with a carrier oil otherwise it can burn a hole in the skin.

I haven't yet tried it as essential oils are so pricey and the tinnitus remedy requires 4 different scents.

Also when you buy essential oil test it...drop a drop onto dark colored construction paper..it should not spread out. Essential oil isn't really oily if its oily its not pure.

Yes we are in no way talking about perfumes, artificial scents, manufactured products etc I can not tolerate any of those. We are discussing only true pure essential oils a totally and completely different thing. These are pure from the plants, natural products. Absolutely different discussion.

I personally would know immediately because of how I would react to it. I buy from a source with excellent reviews and lots of them, they would not have those if they were trying to pass off crap. Read the reviews! There's one on Amazon that has terrible reviews and low prices I definitely would not buy from them. The one I buy from on ebay has hundreds of positive reviews. The labels tell you what is in the bottle some are blends, I avoid these. I will mix two oils in my diffuser if I want a blend. Like eucalyptus and peppermint for helping with respiratory issues.

I do know to only buy 100% essential oils. I'm not talking about a warmer with scented stuff like Scentsy. So I know most of you know what I'm looking for.

I really, really dislike perfumed stuff. I don't use fabric softeners, and make my own detergent. I line-dry our clothes, or out on the balcony in winter so they come in frozen solid and then thaw.

We sleep with the window of the bedroom open year-round. Last night there was a lovely! gale blowing in, and my nose got really cold. I was snuggled under the covers.

Would a lavender diffuser even make a difference, since the window is open???

Also, last nite at our friend's she used the diffuser to show us, and it had peppermint in it. Not a distinct scent at all, it just smelled fresh, overall.

I use them in a diffuser, I don't buy the expensive ones. I also use the oils on items just for a scent. I just bought this little Perk car freshener that clips to you visor, $1 at Dollar tree, I like it but the scent is kinda manly so when the scent dissapears I will add my own oils to it.

The others are right under $20 for the same size.

My personal dislike of artificially added scents to an indoor space aside, remember that medical advice comes from medical doctors and other qualified personnel. Not from the labels of products or the words of people who sell or advocate them.

And that for many people who suffer from allergies, the trigger is different kinds of plant material. There's nothing guaranteeing a substance to be not noxious but rather only "wholesome and pleasant" simply because something is from plants. Real perfume has substantial flower and plant based ingredients. It's all well and good, but if someone wearing too much (which is common) gets on to an elevator with me or sits nearby in a restaurant, it's all I can do to continue breathing. Many public places in my area, especially medical offices, have signs declaring visitors to respect their wishes to remain "Scent free".

Essentials are huge right now...somehow I was following some group on facebook...they had something for everything...it sounded interesting, some of it scary if you didn't know how to use the oils properly. And pricey of the certain brand most were using.

I use lavender for sleep and really think it helps. It at least helps me relax before i sleep. I just wipe a bit on the skin under my nose and I'm good to go. No diffuser needed.

Just a word of advice. Talk to your vet if you have a furry friend before using EO as some are dangerous to pets most expecially cats.

This is the set I got for my granddaughter. They looked beautiful individually set in their box. Seeing so many reminded me of the thrill I got as a kid with a new box of Crayola crayons. :-)
