Mixing Shaker Style and Traditional Cabinets?
Comments (6)Thanks for your suggestions hollysprings! I don't like the idea of walnut knobs on the white cabinets... in my head it looks country and that's not my style at all. I was planning to use polished nickel bin pulls on the drawers and polished nickel oval knobs on the cabinet doors. Also, I forgot to mention that the perimeter counter would be black granite and the island would be carrera marble (or something similar). Your idea of a dark wood top for the hutch is interesting. I'll definitely consider that! But I'm still worried about the two different style doors being so close in proximity and so different from each other... I'd love to do a color island, but KRD doesn't have any color options I like and custom paint is outside the budget for the time being. :(...See MoreMy 'Mediterranean' Kitchen finally finished! This is what started the whole reno, although for a long time the Blue Star was the forerunner. Of course the hood had to follow. I have to say, I went through so many versions of tiles and marble, and backsplash patterns, and of course, I have been influenced by the white subway tile versions, until I realized that mine was not a white subway tile kitchen, no matter how much I may like the subway tile look, and then I just stumbled upon this tile at some closeout place and it turned out perfect. Andi - Travertine Mart was great to work with. Their pricing, with delivery, was so much lower than anyone local that it took everyone out of the running, and the quality is great. I have looked at lesser tiles locally that cost at least 4 times as much, and that's after you add their shipping costs. I would recommend getting liftgate delivery from them, as it's a minimal surcharge and the truck comes with a forklift to unload everything. This stuff is HEAVY and the pavers are almost twice as thick as my tiles. My tile color is country classic, which is a mix of ivory, noche and what they call blue, which is really a version of gray, in the brushed and chiseled version. It needed to be filled unlike the outdoor pavers. If you use an enhancing sealer, the color comes out brighter and the variation is more noticeable, but I wanted the floor to be the backdrop, so we just used a regular sealer that does not enhance the color. I would highly recommend them shipping costs notwithstanding. I'm already toying with the idea of using the pavers outside, although, budget constraints aside, it may be too cold here in the winter for travertine. Sayde - thank you for the kind words and for all your support throughout this process. We are all looking forward to your "unveiling"....See MoreTerracotta floors / Mediterranean style home
Comments (11)No, I didn't forget, but it doesn't really compare. Gold isn't brass. Gold reflects mightily in low light and glows in a way that brass can only stand in the corner and envy. Purple was reserved for royalty, not because it looked good with the other colors, but because it was very rare and very expensive. The point is that there are exceptions to every rule and contravention for every blanket statement. There's also the rule that 2 reds might clash but 20 reds don't, which often works, but when it fails it's really really bad... Look at the things together. Look at them together with different lights. Choose what you like. If you're colorblind you might make choices that don't make sense to others who can't see what you see, but if it's for yourself, go for it. If you like aubergine and brass, please don't let me stop you! (Anyway, it's meh, not shudder-worthy.)...See MoreMediterranean style
Comments (73)I've been following this thread for some time. Braz, your wall hanging is great--I really like it, want you to keep it, and use those colors as your inspiration to decorate with the folks here. But I want you to know that in your lifetime as a homeowner, you are going to be very happy to learn how very easy it is to repair small holes such as would be left by removing a wall hanging, nails, screws, etc. Every homeowner should have a small bucket with some spackle in it (paste-like stuff you buy in a small canister at your local hardware store), some sandpaper of different grits, and a tool for applying the spackle. I like to use a plastic picnic knife. If your wall has texture, then you can buy some spray-on texture. It has been pretty easy for me to imitate the knock-down tract-house texture on my walls, so it should be easy for anyone....See Morekooopons
